Bea heard Owen scream at the to start running, the young woman tried to look over her shoulder to get a glimpse of what was happening behind her with the older ones in the group but her arm was yanked forward and she felt her whole body being pulled straight towards the trees; her legs started moving forward without her realizing it.
Zach had his hand wrapped tightly around Bea's, he had promised Owen that he was going to get Bea out of there if things got nasty and there was no way in hell he was going to leave his girlfriend behind now that Owen was demanding that they start running.
"Owen!" cried Bea, she tried to pull her hand away from Zach's grip as she made an effort to dig her heels into the ground to stop Zach from running.
"No" said Zach's voice, but Bea didn't hear him. The young man pulled her forward and as she stumbled forward she almost crashed against Zach; the young woman felt a pain shot through her hand as her fingers started to go numb and they demanded to be released from the iron grip around them.
"Owen!" Bea shrieked, her voice coming desperate and Zach felt horrible for being the one pulling her away from her brother who was clearly in danger. "Owen!" the last cry broke Zach's heart, her voice sounded desperate and he could her the soul ache in her voice as she screamed for her brother but she got no answer back.
"Oh God please don't let him die!" cried Zach in his mind, because he knew Bea would never forgive him for not letting her help her older brother.
Zach dragged Bea as the entered the forest and left the clearing behind, the young woman was still putting resistance but he could feel the hopelessness in her in the way she ran next to him and the way her fingers curled around his hand. Zach slowed down and gently released some of the pressure he had around Bea's hand, the young woman panted and grabbed Zach's hand with both of her hands as she pressed herself again her boyfriend.
"What's happening?" whispered Bea as they walked slowly down the forest.
"I don't know, I didn't see anyone" Zach whispered back to her.
"Where's Andrew?" asked Bea, she looked around but there was no sign of Andrew.
"He left us" explained Zach, he didn't know that for sure but he was almost sure that was what had happened.
BAM!
Bea let go of Zach and turned around, her eyes wide and her chest starting to rise and fall rapidly, Zach turned slowly and took Bea's hand, he tugged at her and forced her to turn around and look at him.
"We need to go back" she whispered as she tried to look over her shoulder "That was a gun shot, Zach"
"Listen to me," said Zach, her tilted her head up to him and he looked down at her "I can't let you go back there, I promised your brother I would get you out of here"
"He's in danger" she barked, she tried to look over her shoulder but Zach stopped her and held her sight.
"He's Owen, he's gonna be fine but we need to get out of here now" explained Zach, the authority in his voice froze Bea and despite the fact that she wanted to look over her shoulder she didn't; she was almost hypnotized by the authority emanating coming from Zach.
"Where are we going?" asked Bea, Zach dropped his hand from her chin and she took it rapidly, finding reassurance in his touch.
"We'll go down the forest" explained Zach "We marked a few trees to find the way back to the beach" Zach pointed to the trees behind him "Do you trust me?"
"Yes, of course" Bea answered without a doubt.
"Ok then" said Zach, he turned around and the couple started to walk down a small trail, Bea had her hands wrapped around Zach's hand as he lead the way down the small trail.
"Stop" whispered Bea, she pulled Zach towards her, the young man stopped and looked at her over his shoulder "There's someone out there"
"What?"
But Bea had seen something move through the bushes and the last thing she wanted was for something to attack them; she had been attacked one times to many.
"Sweetheart... started Zach but stopped dead as a man with a hunting rifle emerged from behind the bushes with the rifle pointing at them; Zach gently pushed Bea behind himself.
"Well, well, well" chuckled the man "Who the hell are you two?"
"Who the fuck are you?" Bea found herself barking back and Zach prayed to God she didn't piss the man off.
"Feisty aren't you?" asked the man.
Zach squeezed Bea's hand before she could snap back something that could cost them more than a punch.
"Hands up" he said as he glanced down at the holding hands of the teens.
"No" said Zach, there was no way on earth he was going to let go of Bea, last time he had someone point a gun at him, Bea had almost gotten assaulted.
"Kid" sighed the man "Put your hands up before...
"Don't hurt her" said a voice from behind Bea and Zach, Bea turned to look over her shoulder as Zach clenched his jaw.
"Andrew" whispered Bea "I thought you had left"
Andrew seemed to ignore Bea, he had his eyes locked over the man with the rifle, his hands clenched into fists and the fear he had been exuding a few minutes ago was gone.
The man with the rifle looked at Andrew and then turned to look at Bea, he smirked and Zach felt a desire to punch him on the face.
"Hoskins' asset, are you not?" he chuckled, "The one that had to convince Owen"
Zach felt Bea's hands tighten around his hands, she pushed herself closer to Zach as a wave to throw up grew in her stomach.
"Put the fucking gun down" barked Andrew he stepped closer.
"You are gonna get us killed" whispered Bea to Andrew, her eyes still over the man with the gun.
"I... started the man but Andrew grabbed Bea's shoulder and threw her back as he pushed Zach forward, the young woman stumbled back and fell over the floor as Zach tried his best not to collide against the rifle.
"Put the fucking gun down" barked Andrew harder, a shuffling behind the bushes lead to the appearance of a second armed man, this time it was one of the men Bea had seen back at the camp; she cringed and kicked herself away from Andrew.
"We are gonna die" she thought.
Until the second man spoke.
"Oh fuck, you're alive!"
"What?" whispered Bea and Zach at the same time.
"Of course I'm alive!" barked Andrew "And I've been looking for your camp since last night!" he shoved Zach towards the second armed man "And you let her in the camp and rob you? I didn't hire you for this shit"
Both men turned to Bea who now lay over the floor with her eyes huge and her mouth partially gapped as she stared at Andrew; horror didn't come close to what she was feeling.
"Do we kill them?" asked the second man that had missed the first conversation.
"No" said Andrew, he looked over his shoulder to Bea and his eyes soften "Give him a beating first"
The blow to Zach's face with the butt of the rifle came at the same as Bea tried to scramble to her feet; Zach stumbled back, covering his face as blood exploded from his nose, he crashed painfully next to Bea and before the second blow could hit Zach, Bea threw herself over Zach and the kick hit the side of her face and she screamed as hard as her lungs were able to just as Andrew shoved the man that had hit Bea away from them.
Bea gasped for air but forced herself to pull Zach's hands away from his face so she could check the injury, her tears of pain dropping over his face as his own tears ran down his face mixing with his blood; in the distance Bea heard her name being called.
"BEATRIZ!"
