My Dearest Willow,
Does that sound nice? I should start all my letter like that. Anyways, life out here is still business. The food is still disgusting. I wouldn't even feed this too a dog but it's all we have. I shouldn't have expected anything less though. I mean it's not like we're getting chicken dinners or steak. It's a lot of dried or canned food, stuff we used to eat when we were low on money, remember? Somehow you always made this stuff taste delicious though. I really miss your cooking.
I've told the guys about you. They seem to think we're together because I mentioned how I've known you since we were kids, how you're probably the prettiest gal I've ever met and how you used to cook for me and they're completely convinced you're my lover now. Imagine that! I've denied all allegations of course. (Okay, maybe I was a leading them on a bit but I have to keep up the ladies man persona).
Your job seems to be going well and I'm glad. I know your worked hard to get where you're at and once this war is over, don't succumb to the stereotype of settling down with a man and giving up your job. It's what you love to do so do it.
I'm sorry to tell you this over letter, but you asked and my squadron.. We're down one man now. He was my friend. I watched him die. It was Artie. He was just a kid. He barely turned 19. He reminded me of Steve. He had blonde hair. Those aren't tears on the paper by the way. It's raining, I swear. It always rains here. I asked one of the men when it was going to stop, he's from England and he laughed.
I think you would like it here, I mean if we weren't in the middle of a war. The forests we trek through are beautiful and the towns, though small, have a homie feeling to them. You would get a kick out of all the statues too. Remember how we used to make fun of the one of our mayor? Good times.
I'm not trying to be a sap, but I really do miss you Willow. Nobody is as comforting as you are. Hanging out with all these men is almost brutal. I miss the ladies.
What letter number is this by the way? I've tried to keep track but I lost one of yours during a battle. I was reading it and we were ambushed, I shoved it into my pocket but it fell out. I've kept the other ones though, don't worry. I'm more careful now. You're the only link I have to home, you and Steve that is. He's sent me a couple of letters but its weird. He sounds different. Is he okay?
Until next time!
All my love,
James Barnes
