Cecilia: “Cecilia, are you going out with Griffin?” Luke’s voice was hoarse and his grip on my shoulder was too tight.
“Luke… you’re hurting me.” I said. Immediately he let go, but his eyes never left my face. “No, I’m not going out with Griffin, he’s just-just…” Well here’s the thing-even I didn’t know. Luke’s face was hard and angry, something I had never seen before. Disgust rose inside of me. No, this boy was not my friend, and he was not the person I loved; he was a complete different person. Luke had changed, and he was not the same. His eyes softened just for a moment.
“Cecilia, I’m sorry I left you for Kat, but now that I see you with some other guy, well…” Luke said softly not able to finish his sentence. I rolled my eyes. Joy a soap opera.
“Jealous?” I asked. “Luke, it isn’t fair. So you can go hang out and date some wonderful looking girl and I’m not allowed to even be friends with another guy? That’s not fair Luke. Not at all. I’m sorry but you’ve changed, and if we’re gonna still be friends, you have to fix up that attitude.” I place my hands on my hips and glared at him. We were in the middle of a park that seemed oddly empty. It was toward the west end of our town and I felt an odd feeling rise in my chest. Annoyance, anger, hate, disgust; all of it directed toward Luke.
He looked at a creaky swing which was somewhere at my left side. He wouldn’t look me in the face anymore. “Cecilia, I’ve realized that I like you, a lot and more than a friend. Kat was different, I don’t like her anymore. It wasn’t right to leave you but now I’m back… do you love me?” he asked quietly “Will you… give me a chance?”
Now I averted my eyes. Yes I loved him, I knew that was true somewhere deep inside of me. He was a charming boy I knew for a long time. He was kind, sweet, and he was willing to protect me. Or at least that’s what I thought. I didn’t know if that Luke still existed. “I-I don’t know,” I said finally. His eyes were filled with pain. They looked dull, dead and lifeless. I forced myself to look at him. I swallowed a big gulp of air. “I think we’re better off as friends.” My voice cracked. No no no no this wasn’t how it was supposed to work. Luke and I were supposed to be best friends who eventually fell in love, like in all the books I read, that’s how it would’ve become, but why wasn’t it happening? I couldn’t take this barren land, the depressing scene, the tense air. I spun on my heel, and trudged away.
“Ah…um, Cecilia? What’s wrong?” Griffin asked. I sighed and leaned onto his shoulder.
“I’d like to say nothing but that isn’t true.” I muttered in reply. He shrugged me off and spun me around to face him. I didn’t meet his eyes. My own eyes were darting around, desperate to find something to hold onto. But I didn’t find anything. I reluctantly met his gaze. His eyes were cool and calm as he stared into mine and I felt a silent rush of strength in him. I let out a sigh. I wish I could tell him, but it wasn’t that easy. “I wish I could go to some faraway place, get away from all this drama,” I said quietly. Griffin perked up as I said this.
“We could go back to Zeron!” he exclaimed. I raised my eyebrows at him. “Well, Zeron is still a fine place to live, so many people are going back, and I heard it’ll also be like a vacation spot and um… ah, yeah. It was just an um… idea I had. Of course you ah… probably wouldn’t want to…” It was one of the longest sentences Griffin said without breaking it up.
I forced myself to smile. It wasn’t Griffin’s fault that I felt terrible, and he was being plenty nice. “It seems ‘earthlings’ are finally expanding to other worlds.” I joked. I reached over to give Griffin’s hand a reassuring squeeze. He gave me a sheepish smile.
“So… um… I was wondering if you would… maybe, well if you want, um, go to Zeron with me? You could um, bring your family and all too. But if you ah… don’t uh, want to it’s um… okay.” Griffin blabbed, blushing furiously. Griffin was such a good friend, I wouldn’t mind going to Zeron with him even if my family disagreed. But I was so fond of earth, and the air was FINALLY fresh again… I wasn’t so sure. I squeezed my eyes shut, that wasn’t all. I knew, deep down, those weren’t my only reasons. Luke was still such an important part in my life. For many years in my life, he was practically all my life revolved around. I couldn’t just leave him. It didn’t matter if I didn’t love him, (though it was quite amazing that he loved me) He wouldn’t exit my life that easily. I looked at Griffin.
“That sounds awesome… but I need to think about it.”
Kat: Awesome. Next week, I was going to be free. Of course, if I hated it back at Zeron (which seemed highly unlikely) I could move back. I couldn’t wait. Sitting on my comfortable bed, I thought of all the things I loved and missed back home. Earth never would be the same as Zeron. I fidgeted impatiently, seven days. Mom, Dad and Tiffany would be going too, it’d be just like old times. I grinned eagerly at this thought. Listening here and there, it turned out a lot of people would be living at Zeron- even those dinky earthlings. I’d have all my old followers, those pathetic girls who wanted to be just like me, and the people I didn’t know to make it really seem like living my actual, regular life. Perfect. I grinned in satisfaction.
Luke was a sweet chunk of hot but he wasn’t the one for me. It was fun messing around with him, but I wasn’t really going to miss him. Some people from Zeron would be staying on Earth though. I shook my head in disapproval. I wondered what would happen to Griffin. He used to be so fun… but now he was out of my league. I whipped out my phone. I can’t believe he’s still on speed dial. I called him anyways. After three rings he picked up.”Hello?” I heard his voice through the phone. His tone was flat and annoyed. I guess he looked at the caller ID.
“Hey Griffin!” I chirped, using a perky voice for this dead lug of boring. “So, are you going to go to Zeron? I totally am!” I said. I could practically hear him rolling his eyes. Why did I bother calling this guy?
“Well… I might go. If um, none of your business. I just might.” He grumbled. I frowned. Like, what was this guy’s problem?
“If what?” I persisted. There was a long pause. I probably couldn’t care less about his reasons but it was always good to be in the know. He didn’t answer for what felt like five minutes. As I prepared to hang up he just HAD to decide to respond then.
“If Cecilia comes too.” He said bluntly. I literally dropped the phone. Didn’t that only happen in movies? Oh well. I mean, what the heck?! No way was Cecilia coming, she just couldn’t. It would ruin everything, my life, my reputation, my home! I just wouldn’t deal with dusty girl. I knew I’d surely get wrinkles from my frowning.
“First of all, since when did you care about her coming? Do you like her or something?? Icky! Second of all, I won’t let her come! She can’t!” I demanded, with a touch of a little girl’s whine in my voice. I heard Griffin laugh. Frustration was practically spilling out of me.
“You can’t stop her. Or me. It just depends on her decision,” Griffin said quietly. Okay, this guy was either absolutely bonkers or totally in love with her.
“You do like her, don’t you?!”
“Nah, she’s just a really good friend… well, maybe…” he muttered more to himself. But I heard him. With a scoff, I hung up and threw my phone across the room. I really hoped she would decide not to go to Zeron. My life never depended more on someone else’s opinion. Why did dusty girl have to ruin everything for me??? I squeezed my eyes shut. Getting away from her meant so much to me.
My phone started vibrating. I walked across my room to peer at the caller ID. Was Griffin stupid enough to call me again? No, it was an unfamiliar number. I frowned at it. If this was a Zeron phone, any style could define the name even if the caller wasn’t in that phone’s contacts. I rolled my eyes and picked up anyway. “Hello?” I said into the phone. If it was a telemarketer, I swear…
“Hey, Kat? It’s Nat.”
