Cecilia:    “And I tripped, and- and…” Luke muttered

“You kissed her?” I finished. Luke was over at my house for a while and he was telling me all about his adventure with Kat. My chest tinged with jealousy. Luke nodded. He looked very shameful of his kiss; but knowing Kat, she probably enjoyed that kiss. I pulled an armor of courage over me. I had to be strong and help Luke. It was his choice to be with Kat. I scooted toward him and patted his back. “It’s ok… but didn’t you- enjoy the kiss?” I asked. Of course, if I were a guy, I’d be washing my mouth with soap after kissing a girl like Kat.

Luke looked up at me, straight in the eye. His face turned red. “M-maybe, n-not really…” he stuttered. “It’s not like it matters,” he flopped back on a couch and heaved a sigh. “I mean, couldn’t it have been more romantic?”

“Shouldn’t that be what a girl would say?” I reply with a smile. He laughed.

“So I’m a girl now huh?” he says laughing softly. “I feel like such a wimp, I mean, it’s just a kiss, a real man wouldn’t take it so seriously.” He said- wimply. If that was possible.

“You mean like a hunk?” I teased.

“Maybe better than that, I am a hunk, aren’t I?” he replied, giving me a sly smile. I laughed nervously. I wasn’t so sure if Luke was a hunk or not, but he wasn’t that wimpy. His appearance always gave people a bad boy idea, but he was really so sweet. Of course, maybe I only thought that; or maybe I only knew that, because I had known him ever since I was four.

I curled up into a ball. Where was Mama? Crowds of people walked by me, going back underground. I looked back and forth, I didn’t know which path to take back home. “Mama? Mama where are you?” I called out, but my voice was only a tiny squeak compared to the sound of millions of people, all in one area, rushing toward small tunnels. I started crying, balling up my small fists and rubbing my eyes. I only wanted to see the flower. Mama left me. She left me!

A boy taller than me, around two years older walked toward me. He knelt down so he could look at me eye-to-eye. “Are you okay?” he asked

“No! Mama’s gone!” I whimpered. He stood up and held my hand.

Looking down he smiled warmly a steady smile I would never forget. “That’s okay, follow me.”

“But how do you know which tunnel to take? Where’s my Mama?” I asked, tugging on his arms

“All the tunnels lead to one place; we’ll find your Mama there.” He said, looking calmly down at me. I wiped my tears and held his hand tightly. He led me down a tunnel and we landed in a small area; I saw other tunnels with many other people. In the crowds stood Mama.

“Mama Mama!” I cried out, running toward her and giving her a hug. After a good squeeze I ran back to the boy. “Thank you so much, I’m Cecilia.” I put out my hand. “And you?” he pumps my hand which was so much smaller than his steadily four times.

“Luke.”

I leaned over the railing, my arms slung across the bars. What would it be like if I had a successful love? I pondered. Luke was my best friend, and I was sure that was all that would ever happen. I ran my fingers through my hair and blew out a long sigh.

“You’ve been sighing a lot lately,” a voice behind my said. I turned around quickly.

“How did you get in?” I asked alarmingly. It was Luke. Ever since we were younger Luke was always finding the weirdest ways to get in my house. He leaned lazily on my balcony rail. He gave me a mischievous smile.

“Don’t worry, I didn’t pick the lock,” he leaned toward me and whispered into my ear, “You shouldn’t leave your backdoor unlocked.”

My heart pounded and I felt blood rushing to my face. Fear and excitement jolted through my body. Luke suddenly burst out laughing.

“Gawd! You should see your face! I was just kidding; your mom let me in.” Luke fell onto my bed gripping his stomach and tears brimming his eyes as he laughed and laughed.  Anger bubbled inside me.

“That’s it! Get out! Move it! You’re not welcome any more!” I cried out and pushed him off my bed. He continued laughing as I chased him around the house. Slowly my anger evaporated and I too, was laughing my head off.

Finally out of exhaustion, I stopped.  Luke collapsed on the couch beside me. “You still gonna kick me out?” Luke asked, wheezing. I glared at him.

“You got lucky this time!” I said punching him in the arm but I was laughing too, all the way until Mama had to come in and make sure we were ok. Luke’s phone started ringing. He whipped it out of his pocket quickly.

“Hello?” he said. The reception aboveground was much better than underground so I could hear the person on the other end. It was Kat.

“Lukieeeeeeee! Where are you! I saw a really nice purse but Daddy grounded me!” I heard Kat’s whiney voice say. “Can you get it for me? I mean, it’s only a swipe card…. Please? I weelly weeely want it!” she said. I ran my fingers through my hair. Luke turned toward me, his eyes asking, “Should I get it for her?” I shook my head and turned away. It was up to him. His eyes darted back and forth and his face hardened slightly.

“Sorry Kat, I’m busy.”

“Then can you get it for me late-“

“Nope, Daddy grounded me.” Luke replied in a voice as whiney as Kat’s. With that he shut his phone, cutting her off. I gave him a thumbs up; maybe, just maybe, Luke was starting to see what Kat was really like.
