“Alex!” My mother called from down the stairs. I could hear her voice and I guessed that she was standing at the bottom of the stairs and not from the kitchen. She would usually yell from the stairs. She knew that I couldn’t hear her all the way from the kitchen.

I slipped on my black dress shoes and pulled on my blazer. “Yeah?”

“Are you almost ready to leave? You have to be at the school at 7:15!”

“I’ll be down in a second!” I called back, raising my voice, annoyance noticeable in my tone. “Do you know where my cell phone is?”

My mother walked up the stairs and into my room. She placed her hands on my hips. “Does it matter?”

“Yes,” I pulled up my comforter and moved my hands all over the sheet to see if I had slept on it or something.

She sighed. “No, was the correct answer there. It doesn’t matter.”

                “Why?”

“Because you can’t have phones out anyways!”

I groaned and ran into my bathroom. There was my phone, sitting on the counter. Its black color gleamed against the light from above. I grabbed it and ran out of the bathroom, bumping into my mom on the way. Her black bangs swayed off to the side as my mom pushed her fingers against them.

                “Let’s go.”

“What? I don’t get to drive to school?”

She shook her head. “No; I want to drive you. We need to talk.”

                I groaned.

I grabbed my bag, following my mother out of the house and into the garage. When she started her car, I immediately turned on the radio. Out of the corner of my eye I saw her roll her own eyes. “Why are you so crabby lately?”

“I’m not,” Was her only answer. She reached out and roughly pushed the air conditioning button. When she noticed the vent wasn’t blowing air at her, but in the opposite direction, she groaned and moved it towards her. Didn’t she just say that she wasn’t crabby?

                I laughed. “Sure you aren’t.”

My mother glared at me and then turned back to the road. According to the school website, St. Matthew’s was only about five minutes away from our house. My old school was ten minutes away from us. If I wanted to walk to St. Matthews, I’ll bet I could. Not that I would want to. I’ve always been too lazy, like most of the teenagers.

“Mom,” I said again. She kept her eyes on the road as we pulled into the parking lot of the school. “I’m serious. Why are you always in a bad mood lately? What did I do?”

She parked the car and turned off the engine. “What did you do? You had alcohol! You drank illegally and you drank illegal drinks!”
