“Hey, you wanna hear a joke?”

                “No.”

                “And why the hell not?”

I sighed dramatically, slumping forward even further. “The same reason it was five minutes ago, Leah.”

She huffed and crossed her arms over her chest, the room setting into a comfortable silence. Leah had stumbled into my house mid-afternoon drunk as a duck and I had insisted that she stay until she was okay to drive. Don’t want another car accident bumping along anytime soon.

I shut my eyes closed and leaned my head back. Lately, sleep hasn’t exactly been my best friend. We’re actually not on sleeping terms. I was getting more and more frustrated with myself for letting Michael slip through my fingers. He was so good to me, and I just let him go.

Honestly, I don’t understand how all of this started. There used to be so much tension between us two. And now I was carrying his child. How does that happen? How did I end up pregnant with the baby of someone I used to despise? That makes no sense. At all.

I hadn’t even been napping for three minutes when I was jolted awake, done by none other than yours truly.

“Aleeeeeex,” Leah whined, sitting up on my couch to jump. “Why are you so boring?!”

A snort escaped my mouth. “Sorry that I can’t get drunk with you.”

                “You should!” She gasped.

My eyes widened as I gaped at her, my mouth dropping to the floor. Was she serious? She can’t be that ignorant! So many problems could go wrong with the baby if I got drunk…even took a small sip.

But don’t count on her to remember something important like that.

Half a week ago, I had called Leah up and confessed my pregnancy. She was very quiet at first, but then asked many questions and I knew that I had my best friend back.

“Hey, let’s go on a double date!”

“Who?” I asked her, my interest going from her to my nails. Their bland color urged me to paint them.

She giggled loudly, snapping me out of my nail trance. “You, me, Ethan, and Michael!”

I jerked my head up and stared incredulously at her. She couldn’t be serious-how many drinks had she had? As much as I hated to say it, Michael and I weren’t talking normally. We would just occasionally say hello to each other in the hallway and sometimes text me, asking me how I’m doing. Sometimes, I wish that we could talk like normal people. Like, have conversations about something other than my health.

There are so many conflicts that come with pregnancy.

“Why do you want me to go with you on a date with you?”

She stood up on the couch. “You’re my best friend! I want you to go with me on my dates!”

“Leah,” I rolled my eyes. “I’ve never gone on a date with you before, why now?”
