“Your baby’s alive.”
I snapped my head back to the doctor and gasped. My other hand covered my mouth, my fingers quivering. Michael stopped squeezing my hand and I felt his go cold. I first looked down at my stomach, as if it would disappear but didn’t. The doctor sighed and stood up, walking over to Michael. I was still in shock from the news, but I laughed when Doctor Morris turned on his little light and waved it in front of Michael’s eyes. When Michael didn’t wake up from his trance, the doctor snapped his fingers. Michael gasped.
“It’s okay, son. The baby wasn’t harmed.”
My head was spinning. I was so relieved that he or she hadn’t died. But I didn’t know how Michael felt about all of this. I guess I’m about to find out.
Michael coughed, his hand over his heart. He first looked in my direction and then to the doctor. It was as if I could hear exactly what he was thinking. The look he gave me was so shocked and sad that I almost couldn’t think. I just kept staring at him with the same look he gave me.
The doctor reached over and patted Michael’s shoulder, looking at me. His face held a confused expression but I just let it be. I wasn’t in the position to explain what was going on to somebody who hadn’t been with Michael and me from the beginning. “Alexa, Michael, the baby is perfectly fine.”
I nodded slowly, my smile fake. “Then…then why was there blood?”
“This is the time of your period, yes?”
Once again, my slow nod took over.
“That’s the reason. Sometimes it is common to have vaginal bleeding while pregnant if it is during the time of your menstruation cycle. Many women have it during their first trimester, sometimes second,” Dr. Morris explained, his face sincere. “Yes, it is everyone’s first reaction to go to the hospital when we see heavy blood, but this was just fine. If it happens again, let us know so we can note it and then just take care of it as if it were your period.”
“Thank you, doctor,” I said quietly, slightly embarrassed that there was nothing to worry about. I had scared Michael for no reason…
And now he knew about the baby.
“You two enjoy the rest of your night. I’ll notify the nurse and she’ll get you ready to check out,” He said. “Have a good evening.”
“Thank you again, doctor,” This time, a real smile. Dr. Morris smiled back at me and then turned to shut the door to the room.
As soon as he left, it was silent. You could almost smell the awkward. I turned to Michael to look at him. He was staring straight ahead, at the door where the doctor disappeared.
I cleared my throat. “Michael?”
He didn’t say anything but he just continued to stare ahead. His jaw was clenched down hard, his muscles moving. My eyes watered as I watched him. I couldn’t seem to figure out if he was mad, sad, or just didn’t care. “You were pregnant.”
I blinked.
Michael shook his head. “I-I mean…you still are.”
“…Yes.”
