Hands shaking violently and sweaty, I reached for the large tub of ice cream. My mouth watered just at the sight of my favorite flavor, mint chocolate chip. I slipped a finger into the tub and took a small piece of ice cream to pop into my mouth. “Oh, shit.” A couple of drops slopped down onto the floor.

Rolling my eyes at my own clumsiness, I put the ice cream down on the counter and proceeded to clean up my mess. Just as I was throwing the ice cream-soaked paper towel into the trash can, I felt a small tap on my back.

                “Lucy?”

She grinned back at me proudly. And then let out a loud giggle.

                “Why aren’t you in school?”

I watched as she put a small finger to her lips and looked around as if somebody would overhear her. She motioned me to bend down. “Promise not to tell momma? Or Jessie?”

A smile spread across my face. “Yes,” I whispered, my index and middle finger crossed behind my back. If something had happened, of course I was going to tell mom.

“I skipped school!” She whisper-yelled in a hushed tone. Another giggle erupted from her lips.

My hand covered my mouth and I dramatically gasped just for her entertainment. It worked. She nodded happily, proud of herself. “You can’t tell nobody!”

“Anyone,” I corrected her and stood straight up. Our mother would more than likely be having a talk with her. I mean, how could she not notice if her youngest daughter (and the one that she pays the most attention to!) skipped school? That is defiantly not like her. Something’s up. “Don’t go too crazy, Luce. I’m going upstairs.”

“Okay, bye sissy!” She grinned as if she were glad to see me leave the room. Little miss sunshine. I laughed aloud on my way up the stairs.

Plopping down on my bed, I turned my TV on to watch some Jersey Shore. But as soon as I turn it on, it turns back off and so does the electricity.

                Fuck!

I ran downstairs to find Lucy sitting with a big bowl of water…next to an electrical outlet, her hair everywhere. The shocked expression on her face was so priceless that I couldn’t help but take out my phone and take a few snapshots. These would be great.

The front door suddenly bolted open and I jumped, letting out a small yelp. My mom sighed heavily and plopped down onto the couch after shutting the door closed. I don’t think she even realized that the electricity had gone out. Come to think of it, I don’t really understand why it would. Lucy had probably been playing with it earlier today…

“Hi, girls,” My mom mumbled with her eyes closed.

Okay, something is defiantly wrong with her. Never has she come home from work this early and this tired. She works behind the desk of a law firm, for crying out loud! How hard could it be to answer phones all day?
