September 26.
Lincoln twisted and turned in her warm bed, her blankets tangling in her limbs with every move she made. Her face scrunched up in worry as small beads of sweat started to form onto her forehead. Low whimpers escaped her lips and she rolled over onto her side, curling up into a ball. This was routine, every night she went through the same things. Every night she had the same haunting dream."No!!" Lincoln sat up in her bed, breathing heavily. She placed her hand on her forehead trying to control her breathing. "It was just a dream Lincoln, get yourself together." Lincoln kicked the blankets off her legs, turning to look at the time.
6:30am
"Might as well get up now." Lincoln got up out of her bed, walking down the narrow dark halls to the only tight fit bathroom in the apartment. As soon as she pushed the door open she could hear the water dripping from the leaking faucet. Lincoln hated the stupid faucet, every time she wanted to use the sink she had to use pliers to turn the faucets. She hated it, she didn't have the funds to have a plumber come and get it fixed.
Lincoln quickly brushed her teeth and washed her face. She walked out of the small dingy bathroom, making her way to her kitchen. She got a tiny little pot out and filled it with water, placing it on the stove top to let the water boil. While the water was boiling, Lincoln opened the fridge checking to see what there was she could make for breakfast.
"Damn it," Lincoln mumbles as she looks at the content in her fridge. There wasn't much in fridge to eat. Lincoln pulled out the bottle of orange juice that had only one serving left, she also grabbed the remaining slices of bread putting two into the toaster. As she waited for the bread to finish, she heard the little patter of footsteps running down the halls.
"Mommy!" Lincoln smiled seeing the little boy run into the kitchen. She picks him up assaulting his face with kisses.
"Morning baby, how did you sleep?" She asks, pulling back to look at his face. The little boy grins, showing off his baby teeth, his green eyes shining bright.
"Good! Good!" He giggles, laying his head on his mother's shoulder. Parker was the only one who could make his mom smile. His little bubbly personality was everything Lincoln needed to have a good day. Lincoln sets him down on one of the kitchen chairs, just in time for the bread to come out of the toaster. She takes the two slices and slaps on some peanut butter, serving them on a plate to Parker. She filled one of his Spiderman cups with the left over orange juice and also set that in front of him.
"Eat up so we can go give you a bath." She tells him, kissing his head. While Parker ate his breakfast, Lincoln added the coffee mix to the boiled water, pouring it into a coffee mug. She pulled out a chair, sitting next to Parker as she drank her coffee.
"Mommy do I have to go to school today?" Parker looks at his mother in hopes that she would let him stay home. He hated his kindergarten class.
Lincoln finished her coffee, "Nice try bud, hurry up." She gets up washing the coffee mug. Parker pouts eating the last of his toast then quickly gulps down the orange juice.
"Done!" He shouts getting up to throw out the paper plate. He runs to the bathroom, Lincoln following behind him. Parker steps into the bathroom and starts taking off his pajamas. Lincoln turns on the water, adjusting it to the right temperature. She puts the plug in the tub and adds a couple of squirts of his shower gel. Parker climbs into the tub, sinking into the water. Lincoln threw in some of his bath toys so he would be distracted while she washed his thick curly brown hair.
"Alright buddy, time to get out," Lincoln tells him, holding out his towel for him. Parker stands up allowing her to wrap the towel around. "My clean little boy." Lincoln smiles, kissing his cheek.
"Ew mommy!" Parker giggles moving his head so she wouldn't kiss him. Lincoln pushed his bedroom door open, setting him down on the bed.
"What do you want to wear today?" She asks him, opening up his closet. Parker shrugged his shoulders watching her. Lincoln looked back to his clothes and decided to dress him in a long sleeve white shirt, his navy blue cardigan and some simple jeans. "Okay go put on your shoes so I can get ready." Parker nods, running to the front door to get his shoes.
Lincoln headed back to the bathroom and took the quickest shower she could. When she was done she got dressed into her work clothes and through some tugging, smoothing, and a lot of gel she managed to get her hair slicked back into a bun.
"Parker, did you get on your shoes?" Lincoln asks him as she walked into the living room. Parker nods, showing her his feet. "Good boy," She got his jacket and helped him put it on. Lincoln grabbed her purse, along with Parker's school bag.
She held onto his hand as they exited out their apartment. "Here put on your bag," Lincoln handed him the bag to put on while she locked the door. When she was done she grabbed hold of his hand again, leading him out of the apartment building. The entire time they were walking down the block, Lincoln was feeling as she forgot to do something.
"Mommy, where is my lunch?" Parker asked curiously , Lincoln stopped walking cursing under her breath. That's what she forgot!
"Oh baby I'll bring you some lunch when I have my break, I won't forget." She tells him walking again to the bus stop. Parker nods looking around at the other people standing at the bus stop. It only took five minutes for the bus to make it to the stop. Lincoln made Parker get on first then got on after him, using her metro card to pay the bus fare. Parker walked down the isle of the bus, turning to look back at his mother. Most of the seats were taken, there weren't two seats available next to each other.
"It's okay baby you can sit there." Lincoln told him, pointing to the empty seat. Parker sat down, glancing at the person next to him. The person was bobbing there head listening to some music they were blasting through their headphones. Lincoln grabbed onto the pole, standing besides Parker. Parker frowned inching forward so that he was closer to his mom and far from the person.
After being on the bus for twenty minutes they had reached their destination. Lincoln held onto Parker's hand leading him off the bus. They only had to walk a block from the bus stop to get to Parker's school.
"Have a good day at school pumpkin," Lincoln smiles, kissing his head. Parker nods, hugging his mother's waist.
"I will." He tells her before running off into the building. Lincoln watched him for a bit before making the ten minute walk to her job. Lincoln worked at a small family owned diner that was opened 24/7. She was going to be working an 8 hour shift with a break in between. The pay wasn't the best, but it was something to get by on.
