Four hours into her shift, Lincoln finally was able to take her break. She walked into the break room with her purse. She sat down and looked through her bag for her phone, but she couldn't find it. "Great!" She threw the bag onto the table and slumped back in her seat.
"Lincoln?" Debbie stood at the entrance of the break room. "Aspen said you weren't feeling too well today." Debbie had a plate in her hand. She set it down in front of Lincoln. "Here eat, you look like you're about to pass out."
"No, it's fine Debbie, I'm fine. I'm not hungry." Lincoln looked down at the plate in front of her. The smell of the sausages made its way to her noise. Lincoln gagged slightly and pushed the plate further away from her. Debbie noticed and got up with the plate.
"If you need to go home, you can," She told her to which Lincoln shook her head again.
"Please, don't worry...I'll be fine, but thank you." Debbie stared at Lincoln for a bit but decided to leave her alone. Lincoln watched her walk out the break room. It was kind of irritating how everyone was just hovering over her. She was an adult. She understood that they were all worried about her, but she was able to take care of herself.
When Lincoln's shift was over, she gathered all her things to make her way over to Parker's school. She waited with all the other parents for the kids to be dismissed. A small smile appeared on her face when she caught sight of her son. He was placing a notebook in his bag while he walked in the line. Lincoln walks closer to him and smiled at the teacher as she waved Parker over to her.
"Hi mommy!" He said out of breath.
"Hey, how was you day?" She grabbed his bag for him.
"Okay." He walked besides her quietly. Lincoln frowned slightly at his response but doesn't push him. It seemed like they both were having a bad day.
The journey back home was fairly quick, and Lincoln was grateful to see that her phone was on her nightstand, where she left it in her rush to get out the house in the morning.
"Do you have any homework?" Lincoln scrolled through her messages from Niall. He was worried since he hadn't heard from her.
"The teacher didn't give us any today." Parker sat on the floor with his toy cars. Lincoln clicked on Niall's contact and pressed the call button. The phone rang while she walked over to the couch sitting down.
"Hello?" The voice that answered wasn't Niall.
"Who is this?" Lincoln questioned a little confused as to why someone other than Niall was answering his phone.
"Hey- who is on the phone....hello?" Lincoln heard the background conversation.
"Niall?"
"Love! Hey! Sorry, give me a second." Lincoln listened to the conversations becoming distant. "Sorry about that, we just had a rehearsal. How are you? I missed you." Niall breathed into the phone.
"It's okay, I miss you too. I left my phone at home today so I wasn't able to call you during my break." Lincoln explains. The two talked on the phone for an hour, Parker even got a chance to talk to Niall before he had to go.
"I'll call again tonight, goodnight babe."
"Bye..." Lincoln set the phone down besides her. She watched Parker play on the floor for a moment before she got down and began to play with him.
"Mommy, next week is career day at school," Parker suddenly told her. He stopped playing with his trucks to looks at her. "Are you going to come?" Parker tilted his head curiously.
"I don't know sweetie, I have work all of next week." Lincoln stood up from the floor and turned off the tv since they weren't watching it.
"But all the kids were talking about how their parents are coming..." Parker pouted kicking his truck away from him.
"I'm sure not everyone's parents would be able to go." Lincoln tried to reassure him, but Parker was already upset.
"It's not fair, you never go to anything." Parker turned away from her, his face scrunched up in anger. "The kids are going to make fun of me. No one will want to be my friend."
"Parker, listen to me...no one is going to make fun of you. You're so much fun to be around. Besides it's not certain if I can go or not. I'll see what I can do, okay?" Lincoln touched his arm. Parker looked at her, then got up from the floor and went to his room.
"I don't know what to do, he's frustrated with me, and I don't blame him." Lincoln vented to Niall over the phone. She had just placed Parker to bed, after he skipped dinner.
"He's just acting out, I'm sure he'll be fine in the morning. Do you want me to talk to him?" Niall offered.
"No, I'll see how he is in the morning." Lincoln became silent for a second. "Do you think I'm a bad mom?" She quietly asked.
"Babe...how can you think that? You're one of the best mothers that I know. Parker loves you, and he knows that you love him too. Kids just act out, it's going to happen all the time. Don't be too hard on yourself."
"I'm trying not to, but I just feel bad. I feel like I'm not doing as much as I should be doing. It's like Parker is at a disadvantage because I had him at a young age..."
"Your age shouldn't determine your value as a mom. Women have been having kids at young ages for hundreds of years. You're not the first and you won't be the last. You have to be proud of yourself, you've done what you needed to do to provide for your son. That's what makes you a good- no a great mom."
"Thank you, that means a lot for you to say that,"
"My pleasure, now please get some sleep for me love. I can hear you're exhausted."
Lincoln giggled, rolling her eyes. "Fine, but you have to sleep to Mr. Popstar."
"I will, goodnight."
"Night." Lincoln ended the call and laid back in her bed.
Was she really a good mom?
