At the end of her work shift, Lincoln was exhausted. Despite being tired she still had to walk all the way to Parker's school. When she got there, the other parents had started to arrive too. Most were in their fancy cars, with their perfect lives. Lincoln couldn't help but be jealous of the other parents. They all had something she was longing for. Happiness.
A lot of the time, Lincoln felt like the other parents were judging her. She was young, only 20 with a 4 year old. Lincoln stood there waiting for the dismissal bell to ring. When it finally did, she looked to the doors waiting for the kindergarten class to come out. A small smile came on her face when she saw Parker's class come out. She stepped forward, waving at Parker who had finally spotted her. He smiled wide, looking back at his teacher and pointed to her. Once he got the approval of the teacher, he came running over to her.
"Mommy! Mommy!" Lincoln smiles bending over to hug him.
"Hey baby, how was school?" She asks him, grabbing his school bag from him.
"It was fun! We colored and played freeze tag!" Parker chatted about his day. Lincoln nods her head listening to everything he said.
"Did you eat your lunch?" She questions him once they reach the bus stop. Parker nodded his head yes.
"I ate everything even the cookies! They were my favorite!" Lincoln laughs and tells him the cookies were from Debbie.
"Before we go home, I need to stop by the library and then get a few things at the grocery store." Lincoln tells him. The bus finally comes and the two gets on, finding some seats after Lincoln paid for the fare.
Lincoln made them get off the bus two stops early since the library was on that block. She held the door open for Parker, who ran over to the kids area.
"Stay where I can see you," Lincoln warns him making her way to the computers. She sits down clicking on the internet icon. She types in One Direction concert ticket price. She scrolled down the various things that came on the screen, looking for tickets with the seating her tickets had.
"Wow," Lincoln whispers when she saw how much these specific seats cost. They were $400 for the two tickets. Lincoln had to figure out a way to sell the tickets. With that money she could finally get a plumber to fix the faucet and she could put the rest in her funds for a car, along with the $100 tip. Lincoln got off the computer and walked over to where Parker was. "Did you find a book you wanted to take out?" She ruffles his hair.
"This one!" Parker showed her the book he picked, diary of a wimpy kid. "You can read it to me before bed." He stands up, handing her the book.
"Okay, buddy. Let's go check it out." Lincoln swiped her library card, then placed the book in Parker's school bag. It didn't take them long to walk to the small grocery store by their apartment building.
Lincoln walked down the isle of the grocery store browsing what she thought she should buy.
"Can we get these?" Parker shower her the box of cereal he picked out. Lincoln nods after seeing that the cereal was only $1.69, Parker dumped the cereal in the basket.
"Can you grab six of the yogurts please." Lincoln points them out to Parker, there was a deal 45 cents per yogurt. From that isle she grabbed a 12 pack box of the instant Ramen for $2.27. The other items on her list included pancake mix for $1.97, a loaf of wheat bread for $1, a small gallon of milk for $2.35, and some eggs for $1.99. For Parker's lunch she grabbed 5 of the lunchables for $1 each.
Lincoln loaded everything onto the conveyer belt, watching the worker ring everything up.
"$19.25 is your total." Lincoln reached into her wallet pulling out a twenty. Her goal was to only spend $20 and she beat that goal. It made her so happy. Lincoln carried all the bags that were heavy and let Parker carry the bag that contained the yogurt, cereal and bread.
When they finally made it to the apartment building they were greeted by the clerk at the desk.
"Hey, quick question do you know anyone who would be willing to buy two One Direction tickets for $400." Lincoln knew in order to sell these tickets she would have to ask around.
"Actually I do, I have two teen daughters who loves that band. Would you mind taking a check?"
Lincoln shook her head, "No, not at all." She couldn't believe her luck right now. The clerk wrote out a check for $400 and handed it to Lincoln. Lincoln took the check, happily handing the tickets to the clerk.
"Have a good day ma'am," he said, Lincoln nods and says the same to him. Inside their apartment, Lincoln checked to see if Parker had any homework, he didn't. Parker kicked off his shoes and ran into the living room jumping onto the couch. They didn't have cable so Parker usually just watched a movie they either rented or bought for cheap.
"What do you want to watch?" Lincoln asks him as she unloaded the groceries. Parker looked at all the movies they had.
"Hercules!" Lincoln walks over to the tv and puts the dvd into the player. She hands him the remote and walks back into the kitchen. For dinner she decided she would make one of the packets of ramen.
While Parker was watching the movie, Lincoln prepared the ramen. Once it was done she served the noodles into two bowls.
"Parker come eat, honey." Parker paused the movie and ran into the kitchen. "No running babe." Parker sat down in his chair picking up his fork. He blew on the noodles before shoving a large fork full in his mouth. Lincoln laughed as she watched him.
"Silly boy." She sat down and began to eat her noodles as well.
"I'm full." Parker huffs setting his fork down. Lincoln looked into his bowl and saw that he finished everything in it.
"Okay, drink your water." She stood up taking both of their bowls to the sink. Parker finished the water and handed the cup to his mother. Lincoln washed everything and placed them in the right spots. Lincoln decided to let Parker watch the rest of the movie before he had to take a bath for bed.
"It's over," Parker yawns stretching out his arms. Lincoln lifted him up and carried him to the bathroom. She helped him out of his clothes and into the tub she had filled with water and bubbles. All throughout his bath, Parker was slowly falling asleep. Lincoln quickly bathed him and got some clean pajamas on him. She then carried him into his room and tucked him under his covers. Lincoln pushed his hair back, kissing the top of his head.
"Mommy?" Parker mumbles opening his eyes a bit.
"Yeah?"
"How come I don't have a daddy?" Sounds of glass breaking and screams filled Lincoln's head. She shook her head to get the sounds out. She didn't know what to tell him. She knew that someday he would ask her that question, but she had hoped at that time she would have an answer for him.
Lincoln lets out a sigh, "Goodnight Parker," she left his door slightly ajar and made her way to her room. She climbed onto her bed, wrapping her arms around herself, before she knew it small sobs had escaped her lips. The tears flowed freely down her face as she buried her face into her pillow, screaming into it.
