I sighed, feeling the familiar tingle of Haru’s touch as he lightly ran his pointer finger across the bare skin of my arm sooth me. He and I hadn’t been able to get any alone time for a while now, and with Momoe and Kakashi gone to search for Manami, who’d unexpectedly gone missing while visiting Nion, Haru and I were simply enjoying the silence.
“How did we end up like this?” With my back pressed against his chest, I could feel rather than hear Haru when he whispered.
“Like what?” I rolled over and slung my arm over his waist, pulling myself closer to him. Haru had propped himself up on his elbow, but with this free hand, ran his fingers through my hair.
“Like this. We absolutely hated each other, and now here we are, snuggling.” I grunted my agreement.
“Well, it sure is a three sixty to what academy life was like, I can say that for sure.” Haru leaned down, kissing the top of my head.
“I really like you, Migome.” The confession threatened to turn my cheeks red.
“Thanks, I like me, too.” I felt his fingers at the bottom of my chin, tilting my head up to face him. Blue eyes stared into my own, and I found myself not able to look away. The way his golden hair spiked, and how his expressions told you everything you needed to know, the way his touch was gentle but firm at the same time, everything about him was perfect. And, somehow, in a mass of confusion, he became mine.
Slowly, his head lowered, until our lips touched. Soft, at first, but as Haru slowly manoeuvred himself above me, his lips pressed harder against mine. We didn’t take it further than that for a while, simply moving our lips in sync with the other.
“May I?” I opened my eyes, which had closed at some point apparently, to stare back at the Uzumaki. I felt my cheeks finally redden.
“Idiot.” I grumbled, which, in turn, made a small smile stretch across Haru’s face. He lowered his head, and I opened my mouth for him. Both of his hands found mine, and his held them either side of my head, our fingers entwined as we expressed ourselves in ways pride-filled teenagers only knew how.
I felt a tear escape the corner of my left eye, but I ignored it. Haru was breathing heavy, and so was I. As his hands tightened on my own, I found myself overcome with the emotions. I really liked Haru, as in, really liked him, and he liked me too.
Another tear.
I was just so grateful. Someone had taken to get to know me- someone had taken the time to like me. Nobody liked me, at times, not even my own mother. Here was Haru, however, investing his time into me. I was just so grateful.
Another tear.
“What’s wrong? Migome?” Haru had noticed me crying, now. I turned my head to the side to try and hide my face, because never was I going to say what I had just thought.
“Nothing.” I answered instead, pursing my lips.
Haru leaned down and kissed below my eye, where another tear was. “Why are you crying, Love?” My heart did a flip in my chest, but still, I avoided the truth.
“Because you have bad breath.” Haru didn’t react at first; he just closed his eyes and rested his head in the crook of my neck, squeezing my hands with his every now and again. I stared at the ceiling, in the meantime, wanting to hug him, but hand-holding wasn’t all that bad in the first place.
“Y’know,” He finally spoke, his voice slightly muffled, “I understand you Uchiha’s have your pride or whatever, but sometimes… Sometimes it’s nice to have some proof that you actually like me.” I didn’t know what to say, and even if I did, I wouldn’t have been able to say it. My throat closed up and my mouth went dry.
“Haru,” I finally forced out, “I…” I couldn’t get further than that. The words I was previously going to use flew from my mind, and a simple ‘Sorry’ wasn’t in my vocabulary. So I laid there, Haru still hovering over me with his head in the crook of my neck, his breath tickling my skin.
I was going to attempt to talk again, where the phone started buzzing, signalling a call from the front desk. Haru wasted no time exiting the room, not saying another word, to answer the phone. I laid there for a moment longer, my ego trying to recover from the near fatal attack from Haru’s blatant rejection. I wasn’t used to being ignored, after all. People may not like me, but they certainly don’t ignore me.
Finally gaining the resolve to leave bed, I entered the living room, where Haru was trying to calm whoever was on the other end.
“Yes. Yes, I understand-. No, we take full responsibility.” Haru’s cheeks were a light pink, and I could see how uncomfortable he was from where I was standing- the other side of the room. “Alright, send him up. If he- Yes, yes of course. We’ll pay in full.” Finally, the Uzumaki hung up with a sigh.
“Who was that?” I asked, approaching.
“The girl at the reception desk.” I could tell Haru was attempting to regain normality, but he was trying too hard, and he was making it obvious. “Nion came in asking for our room number, and after she told him to leave he purposely knocked over a vase, and then asked again.” My eye twitched.
Goddamn it, Nion.
Haru sighed, rubbing the back of his head. “And she was yelling at me and saying that we had to pay for it, and if he breaks anything else coming up to the room, we have to pay for that, too.”
“Of course.” I grumbled, but approached the door, waiting for Nion’s arrival. Soon there was a knock, and I tore open the door, where a bemused Nion stood mid-knock.
“Oh, uh, hey.” I grabbed him by the collar, pulling him into the room. He cried out, stumbling forward. When I slammed the door shut, I spun around with my arms crossed. Haru was on the other side of my brother, mimicking my own expression and body language.
Nion looked between the two of us, straightening up and clearing his throat. “Uhm, so, how about that airline food?”
“You broke a vase.” I ignored his lame attempt at breaking the ice.
“In my defence,” Nion started, turning to me. “It was looking at me funny.”
“We have to pay for it.” Haru was equally as annoyed as I was, and his voice portrayed it perfectly. “That vase is expensive.”
“As it should be,” Nion faced Haru now, “I mean, I touched it. The value probably went up tenfold. That woman should thank me, I just increased her income.”
“Nion.” My brother turned back to me, grinning.
“Yeah?”
“I hate you.”
