Mason's POV
She was gone. Standing there in the bed and breakfast's kitchen as sunset was fast approaching, I felt more alone than ever. I tried not to think too much, afraid that if I did, I wouldn't be able to do what I was about to do. And what I was about to do was what would be best for both of us.
I was going to leave tonight. I knew that if I stayed to tell her how I felt, it wouldn't matter. I guess I sort of knew that all along. Telling her how much I cared for her would just make things worse. I knew she would still stay with Seth, because she was so sure she was in love with him. I, on the other hand, wasn't so sure. I thought they had gotten together too fast. How could Violet know for sure that she liked him if she wasn't friends with him first? That's how it was with me and Remmy, and that didn't work out too well.
I cleared this thought away from my mind, not wanting to think about Remmy right now. I found that recently she had begun to give me a headache often.
I turned around, heading toward the front stairs leading to the guest rooms. The whole time I trudged up the stairs, I couldn't shake away the feeling of rejection from my mind, as hard as I tried. I'd never felt this strongly about a girl before, and when I finally think I've found her, she's already with Seth, who always gets the girl.
Once up in my room, I quickly stuffed my belongings into my suitcase. I wasn't really paying attention to what I was doing. My mind was gone, in a place far away. Maybe when I got back to California I'd find another girl like Violet.
I thought about this for a moment before letting out a short, humorless laugh. Of course I wouldn't find another girl like Violet. Violet was one of a kind. She was sweet, kind, innocent, not to mention beautiful. I knew I wouldn't find a girl like her in California.
When I was done packing, I headed down the stairs, grabbing my room key on the way down. Once I had the main counter, I got a sticky note located in the corner of the counter and wrote my room number on it. After I was finished writing, I stuck it firmly to the key. I knew that Violet or one of her parents would see it in the morning. I could've rung the bell located on the wall, but I didn't want to disturb them.
After placing the key on the counter, I grabbed my bag and headed out the door. Reaching into my pocket, I grabbed the keys to the Ferrari, feeling a little comforted by them. I knew I couldn't outdrive my problems, but I sure as heck was gonna try. The good thing about Ferraris is they're fast.
I felt a smile slowly creeping onto my face. I slid into the car, inhaling the scent of expensive Italian leather. Turning the keys in the ignition, the car came to life. The low hum of the engine comforted me. I wanted, I needed, to drive fast right now.
After I was out of the parking lot, I took off. The sunset was visible on my left, sending beautiful colors into the sky. The colors reflected off the water, making the water resemble the sky. I knew I had told myself that I wanted to get away as fast as possible, but I found that I couldn't with the sunset occurring so near to me.
Giving up, I pulled off the side of the road and got out of the car. I leaned against it, watching as the sun slowly slid down into the water. At first, when the sun was still mostly visible, the reds, yellows, oranges, purples, pinks, and blues dominated the sky, seeming to cover every inch of visible space. The colors were so vibrant, I felt like I was staring at a picture masterpiece. The colors, though completely different, all found someway to mix in a way that made them perfect together.
I thought, briefly, that this was kind of like people. Although we all had different talents and we all looked different and spoke different languages, we all found a way to live together in harmony.
