CHAPTER 9
*Sarah* After lunch the day went by relatively fast, the miniature ice sculpture Jason gave me didn't seem to melt, so I popped it in my locker for safe keeping. Before I knew it I was putting my books away and grabbing my bag getting ready to go home. I decided to turn down John’s offer on a ride home, I had a pretty nice lunch and I intended on keeping it down. As I grabbed the last of my homework I felt the familiar buzzing of my phone in my pocket. It was a message;
**Hello there my little mate, I grabbed your number from Lucas's phone at lunch today. He didn't seem to notice with Jennifer all over him, I was just curious, have you got any plans tonight?**
Wow my mate is sneaky. Wow did I just call him MY MATE? I quickly texted him back.
** I'm gonna take a guess and say this is Jason? ** ** You’re a smart cookie, So are you free?**
I laughed to myself, he really was persistent.
**I'm free, why what did you have in mind?**
I waited a few moments for a reply back, but nothing came. I started my walk back home and I thanked god it isn't a very long one, this weather is getting ridiculous! I had no idea it was going to be this cold when I looked out the window this morning. Damn, deceiving sky! I held my arms around me wishing I was wearing more than just my skinny jeans and a long sleeved T-shirt. “Achoo!” I sneezed. Great that's all I need, a cold! As soon as I get home it's oranges, vitamin C tablets and warmer clothes. I really despised colds! The heavy head, the puffy face and don't get me started on the runny nose! As soon as I got in the house I turned on all the heaters, got into one of my favourite knitted jumpers, curled up on the couch and started eating an orange. It only took me a few minutes to finish my orange when I realized that the guys weren't home yet. That can't be right, John was driving they should of been home ages ago! A quick text to Lucas should calm my nerves.
** Hey Lucas, I just got home… where are you guys?**
It's not like they needed to check in with me when they go somewhere, but it didn't mean that I wasn't worried. My thoughts were interrupted when I felt ground underneath my feet start to shake. The house was shaking and things were falling over! Oh god an earthquake! What the hell do you do when there's an earthquake?! I could barely hear myself think with all the noise, the only thing that was running through my head was- GET OUT OF THE HOUSE! I didn't want it to collapse on me. Just as I grabbed the door handle to get out, it stopped. The ground was no longer shaking, everything stood still once more and everything was back to normal. What the hell?! That was so crazy! I thought. I started to pick up everything that had fallen over, looks like only a vase that I hoped had no history or meaning had broken. I quickly turned off all the heaters, I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that, if an earthquake happens you should turn off all your gas just in case the earthquake damaged any of the lines in or to the house. I looked back at my phone, still no reply from either Lucas or Jason. This was starting to worry me. Where were Lucas and John? I decided on calling Lucas, just as I was about to hit the call button they came bursting through the front door all puffed out of air. "Hey Sarah! Did you feel the earthquake! How intense was that?!" Lucas yelled.
"Yeah it was something...where have you guys been?" I said, a little shakey. I was so happy when I saw them walk through the front door that I didn't notice they were covered in dirt and that there clothes had been teared up a bit. "Oh, well you see..." John trailed off. "And why are you guys so dirty?! I thought you just had soccer practice this morning?" I asked curiously. Suddenly a huge smile appeared on both their faces. "We did but we saw a couple of the guys kicking around the ball and we couldn't resist!" John said. "Yeah, it got a bit full on and it got a bit muddy. Which reminds me, we should probably get out of these dirty clothes! We wouldn't want to catch a cold!" Lucas said almost a little too happy. There was something they weren't telling me. I don't know why they feel like they have to hide things away from me. "Yeah that's probably a good idea," I said more to myself than to them. They quickly ran up the stairs and out of my sight. Once again my pocket was vibrating and I looked at my phone screen to see that Jason had replied.
** Sorry about the late reply my little mate, be ready for a surprise around 6:30, dress nice, tell your step brothers you’re going to one of your friends houses for dinner** **I’ll do my best =)**
A surprise? I wasn't big on them. Sure I loved giving people surprises, but receiving them? They just make me anxious. Well here goes nothing.
