CHAPTER 23
Over the last hour I had been going over every detail of the cabin I am being held captive in. So far in my investigation, everything was too far away from me to reach and there was one small window above a dining table for a possible escape, knowing the front door was locked. But before any plans of getting out of here could form, I first needed to think of how I was going to get out of these handcuffs that were keeping me pinned to this bed. I only had one idea and it was a long shot but it was my only idea. Fingers crossed all those spy movies dad made me watch would pay off right now.
I grabbed the bobby pin that was holding back my fringe, I bent it into a straight line and begun trying to pick the lock but after a few minutes of no luck I was becoming frustrated and nearly threw the bobby pin away. That was when I was struck with an idea. I took off the rubbery parts of the bobby pin and bent the end with my teeth making it look the letter 'L' I tried picking the lock again and that's when I heard the most beautiful sound I had ever heard, the clicking of the lock on my handcuffs. I quickly jumped off the bed and grabbed the throw blanket that hung over the couch, I ran over to the dining table that was in front of the window and stood there staring at the centre piece. I couldn't believe that hadn't notice what type of flowers they were. It was those god damn chocolate cosmos flowers that hid my scent! I screamed and in a fit of rage I threw the vase across the room.
Once I had calmed down briefly I climbed my way onto the table that was in front of the window. I wrapped the blankets around my fist and punched the window as hard as I could. The glass fractured and I could feel it giving way. I punched it again, making the whole window accessible for me to get through. I threw the blanket that was once on my hand over the broken glass at the bottom of the window sill, I couldn’t wait any longer to make the exit perfect. I managed to get through the tight window although not without getting a few scrapes and cuts. My feet hit the ground and that's when I started running for my life, for a second time. I didn't really know where I was running, I just knew I had to get as far away from that cabin as physically possible.
Hopefully Jason could pick up on my scent soon and come find me, although I didn't know how far away from the horrible flowers I needed to be. I tripped a few times on roots of trees sticking out of the ground and random twigs were constantly hitting me, running through a thick forest wasn't exactly the easiest of things. I saw a clearing up ahead with smoke rising through the trees. Maybe there were campers or hikers or a ranger, just as long as they were people! I saw a man packing up his camping gear into his backpack and I couldn't risk the chance of him running off so I started to scream out to him.
"HEEEELLLP!" I screamed at the top of my voice. The camper turned around as I fell to my knees when I reached him. "Oh my god! Are you okay? What happened?" He fired question after question. A wash of relief came over me when he helped me up. "Please sir, do you have a phone?" I choked out as I tried to catch my breath.
"Of course," He begun rummaging through his bag when he handed me an old Nokia phone, I took it gladly and thanked god I remembered my new home phone number.RING....RING....RING.....RING........'Please pick up, please' I thought to myself. "Hi you've reached Carol, Thomas, John, Lucas and Sarah sorry we missed your call, but leave a message and someone will get back to you" Beeeeeep. I heard Carol's recorded voice say. "Please if someone is there, pick up it’s Sarah, I got away but I don't know where he is please--" I begged into the phone, suddenly I heard someone's voice on the other end of the line. "SARAH!" someone yelled.
"Thank god someone answered" I sighed in relief.
"It's Lucas, where are you? Are you okay?" He asked, with worry in his voice.
"I'm fine, I don't really know where I am, hang on I’ll ask" I looked over to the man that had graciously handed over his phone to me, to find him staring at something in the distance behind me, with a look of terror showing on his face.
"Sir? Ah do you know where we are?" He didn't answer, still staring at whatever was behind me. I slowly looked behind myself and realized my nightmare had just escalated to a full on night terror.
"Vincent," I whispered. He had two bodies slumped on top of each other on his shoulder, his mouth and bottom half of his jaw was covered in blood. A fierce growl erupted out of him, it was so loud I was sure Lucas would have heard it on the other end of the phone. I wanted to run, I wanted to get as far away from him but it was no use, I was frozen with fear.
I could hear my name being yelled from the phone that was still in my tight grasp. "SARAH! SARAH! It’s Jason! What’s happening?! Where are you?" At the mention of Jason's name I snapped back to reality, I managed to get out "JAS--" but Vincent was quicker than my voice. He dropped the two bodies to the ground and seized my wrist, he held it so tightly I couldn’t help but let out a blood curdling scream.
I dropped the phone and Vincent crushed it instantly with his foot. I heard the retreating footsteps of the camper and I hoped with all my heart that him helping me hadn't gotten him killed today. "Sarah, I have to say I am not very impressed," He gripped my wrist even tighter and I swear I heard something break. I tried to keep in my scream but couldn't hold back the tears."I DONT UNDERSTAND!" He yelled, he threw me across the clearing and my back made contact with a tree. My body slumped to the ground, the wind had been knocked out of me and it was hard to catch my breath. I pushed myself up using my good hand so I was leaning against the tree. When I looked over towards where I was standing, Vincent had disappeared and this had me worried. I looked around and found no sign of him. I began to limp towards the forest, past the fire and that’s when I saw him. I within metres of him and the dead camper who had leant me his phone, they were both on the ground. I gasped, in an instant Vincent had made his way over to me and had me pinned in the air by my throat. My feet were kicking slightly trying to get out of his death grip.
"All I have done is show you love and you keep throwing it all back in my face!" He brought me uncomfortably closer to his face and his haunting eyes were looking at me so intensely I shivered, he was more monster than human right now. I closed my eyes thinking of my friends, family and Jason, thinking these were my final moments. I felt his cold, wet, bloody lips on my forehead. I opened my eyes to see his expression had changed. "You're lucky that I am a forgiving man, who is madly in love with you." This is when I really started to struggle, let him break my neck; I'd rather be dead than be with him! He gently placed me back on the ground, releasing his hand from my neck moving it to the back of my head holding me in place.
He leant in, I shook at the thought of his lips on mine again and closed my eyes, but he didn’t kiss me. His head slowly moved to the side of mine, his hair brushing the side of my face as his lips reached towards my ear."I love you, Sarah for always and eternity." And then I felt Vincent's fangs pierce into my neck.
