FIVE YEARS LATER
"Jack and Debbie! Stop fooling around in the bathroom and come to your room! It's time for bed!" Sarah called in her no-nonsense voice.
Two four year old children came into the bedroom where Sarah stood waiting. They were both dressed in pajamas and were hopefully ready for bed.
"Mommy, Jack took all the toothpaste," Debbie said, as she went to her bookshelf to look for a story. She was forever tattling on her brother.
"I'll buy some more tomorrow," Sarah said, as she tucked Jack into bed. Debbie chose "Goodnight Moon" for her to read. It was her favorite.
Sarah was hoping that one story would be enough for the twins. It had been an exhausting day. Debbie joined Jack in his bed for story time. Jack always fell asleep first so they read stories in his bed. Sarah read the story in her melodious voice, the rhythm of the words making her feel sleepy herself. She finally got Debbie into her own bed and tucked in for the night.
"Nigh-night, Mommy," Debbie said, closing her eyes.
"Nigh-night, baby," Sarah said softly, kissing Debbie on the cheek.
Sarah kissed Jack's cheek before she left the room.
Sarah went into the living room and sank onto the couch, grateful that the long day was almost over.
That's where Grant found her sleeping an hour later. He nuzzled her awake.
"Sorry I'm late, honey," he said, kissing her.
Sarah yawned.
"Your dinner is warming in the oven," she said sleepily, hugging her husband in greeting. She loved feeling his arms around her, especially at the end of a long day.
"I'll eat something in a minute," he said lovingly. "Right now I want to enjoy my second favorite moment of the day."
"Second favorite? What's your first favorite?" she asked curiously.
"Waking up next to you in bed every morning," he answered.
"Aw, that's so sweet," she said, kissing him.
A few minutes later, Grant raised his head and asked, "How are the kids?"
"They're good. We went to the Wildlife Park today. They had fun."
"And how is mom?" he asked, rubbing her back suggestively.
"Tired. But I'm getting a second wind," she replied, giggling as Grant found one of her ticklish spots. Sarah loved the physical part of their relationship. Grant was a skilled, tender lover and he never failed to arouse her. Now that the twins were sleeping through the night, they had more time to themselves. And they made good use of it.
"I think I'm in the mood to have dessert first tonight," Grant murmured, nibbling on her ear lobe.
Sighing in pleasure, Sarah said, "But I cooked your favorite."
"You are my favorite," he answered, picking her up and carrying her to their bedroom. The rest of the world disappeared as they loved each other tenderly, completely. They knew they were soul mates. And that was what life was all about.
The End
