I sat cross-legged in front of the massive floor-to-ceiling windows on the observation deck. I watched curiously as two separate quinjets landed smoothly on the landing strip. My heart leapt into a gallop when I saw a familiar face exit one of them, wearing a leather jacket and his hands shoved into his pants pockets.
I was worried about what he was going to think when he saw me. Would he be afraid of me? Suspicious? Absolutely shocked was a definite. My next thought made me nauseous.
Would he...hate me? I mean, I'd practically lied to him in the three years I'd been around him during World War II.
I was always worried about what he'd think of me ever since I saw him in Times Square. It wasn't like he would've been able to understand if I'd explained it to him.
"Hey, Steve. I'm Andi. I'm a time traveller and I'm hundreds of thousands of years old. Damn! This sure is a terrible place to be in. You know, the war and death and everything. Don't worry, I've been in worse."
Yeah, that would've gone down spectacularly. Nothing could've possibly gone wrong. Just swell.
I flipped my watch in my palm. I was going to have to face him sooner or later, regardless of my feelings. After all, I was going to be working with him. Again.
I rested my hands on the floor for grip as the Helicarrier began to lift into the sky. There was, at least, one good thing blowing my way: my wrist had healed. Time did heal all wounds. Especially if you cheated it.
I stood. It was time to face my demons. At least this one was knee deep in freedom.
