9.11.2084 Monday Evening

The school day was a drag, just like I had guessed it would be; but it was worth it, if it made my mom happy. I slowly left the school and climbed up a nearby tree. I needed a short nap after another late night adventure and I could only hope that it wouldn’t happen again. I relaxed on a limb, resting my back against the trunk.

I only had begun to close my eyes when I heard my name called. My hearing was sharper than others and I could tell my best friend was standing beside the sad thing I called a car. I jumped down and walked over to her. "Yes?" I asked as I stared at her, irritated not to be napping.

"Oh Kitty, don’t be mad. I just wanted to join you and Pete for ice-cream," she sighed as she looked back at me.

"Of course you do," I hissed and she gave me the warning look. "Sorry, you interrupted my nap."

"Sorry Kitty, but you truly need to be more careful," she giggled as she sat on the hood. She ran a hand through her long black hair as she continued to stare at me.

"I know, Mone; but it has been so difficult to hide everything, knowing Pete could be like me any day," I sighed as I glanced around.

"Your change didn’t happen till your birthday and mine didn’t either," she told as he excited brown eyes followed a butterfly.

"Mone, he turns fifteen in two weeks! Two weeks!" I exclaimed as I threw my hands in the air to emphasize.

"He could be like your mom," she pointed out as she leapt onto the top of the car and easily crouched there.

"I know, but he already is always hungry," I complained as I stared at her.

"Kitty, he is a teenage boy! Of course he is hungry," she laughed and I nodded. "Oh Kitty, what else is troubling you?"

"Nothing, just my dad…" I started as I glanced away. I hated when I thought about him because it always brought tears.

"Kitty, it is okay," Mone said calmly as she rubbed my back. "You don’t need to say anymore."

"But Mone…What he told me as stories about the old days run through my mind all the time…How the people created things like us…and how they used to be like from birth…instead of having to wait fifteen years, worrying…" I told as I felt my muscles tense slowly.

"Well, those days have been over for so long," she commented as she slid off. "Don’t fret Kitty. Everything will be fine."

"I hope you’re right," I sighed as we got in the car.
