CHAPTER 22

“Are you insane? I can’t go to Heaven. Not when the Archangels want to kill me.”

Meredith was quivering with fear as Janelle told her that she had to be reunited with her kind; that she had to talk to the Archangels in order to save Joey. She didn’t understand why she couldn’t just go through Hell, grab Joey and escape from all of this. As much as Meredith wanted to know about herself, her first priority was saving Joey Olsen, and to her it seemed like going to Heaven will only protract the course.

“The Archangels will not kill you, sister.”

There was a sort of earnest in Janelle’s voice and eyes, the kind of desperation Meredith had only seen in herself when Joey was in jeopardy. To her, it was evident that she cared for Meredith, but something was gnawing within her, something she couldn’t quite place. For some reason, she felt she had to stay on Earth in order to find Joey.

“I have to find Joey,” she whispered, swallowing back the sobs that were building up in her chest. “I don’t care for the greater good, or for Heaven. All I care about is finding Joey.” Janelle led out a deep sigh and her eyes searched the area around her. It seemed as though she was making sure no one was listening, but Meredith wasn’t sure.

“There is a doorway in Heaven that opens into Hell. If it is true that you are half Human, you will be able to cross the threshold.” Janelle was all serious and poised, and she seemed a little afraid sharing these secrets with Meredith, but Meredith stared at her in disbelief and cried, “Why didn’t you say so in the first place? I need to find Joey Olsen.”

Janelle swallowed and looked towards the dark-haired Demon. His face carried no emotion. It seemed as though the matters Meredith and Janelle were discussing had no significance to him. Meredith still didn’t grasp why Janelle was conspiring with a Demon, which should be a red flag, but she was trying to be open-minded and she was willing to do anything she could to rescue her Human.

“I’m not supposed to have told anyone Meredith, but if finding Joey is what brings you back to Heaven, then so be it.”

Meredith couldn’t contain the joy she felt at that very moment, and without warning, she flung her arms around Janelle’s neck and hugged her so tightly that the Angel had to struggle out of her grip. She cleared her throat several times before Meredith let her go.

“You are too Human,” said Janelle, taking Meredith’s hands into her. “It’s time to take you home, sister.”

Meredith nodded in agreement as Janelle took her hands within hers and uttered something in a language Meredith once knew, but couldn’t understand anymore. She took in Janelle’s stance, and then closed her eyes, all the time keeping Joey’s face in her mind. She couldn’t recall ever feeling anything compared to what she felt for Joey. She loved him more than she loved anything else. She loved him as a sister would love a brother, as a wife would love her husband. She loved Joey in so many different ways, but loving him as her Human was the most important thing at the moment, because she was his Guardian Angel, and she had to find him.
