CHAPTER 17
Meredith looked at Joey with fear burning within her infinite black eyes. The cerise gleam in her eyes had rapidly disappeared, and as Meredith searched within herself for her brilliant white and cerise Aura, she found nothing but a trivial glow, scarcely brighter than a candle burning within a clear room. She closed her eyes and let herself go; hoping her luminous white Wings tipped with cerise at the ends would expand from her shoulder blades. But nothing happened. Meredith hadn’t felt so powerless, so human, in what seemed to be a lifetime.
Joey held her hands within his, and stared intensely into Meredith’s eyes. As much as he hated the fact that she was not human, as much as he despised the truth that she seemed more alien than person, he was petrified for Meredith, because without her Guardian Angel Powers, they were vulnerable to the danger of the unknown. He could already see Lucifer laughing at him as he killed Meredith; he could hear Lucifer telling him, I told you so. His hands started trembling at the visage, and Joey couldn’t help but let go of Meredith’s hands and take a seat on the edge of the bed.
“Joey, are you alright?” He laughed at Meredith’s concern, because she was the one who was losing her Heavenly Powers, yet here Meredith was, worried about Joey’s humane actions. Meredith cocked her head to the side, dumb folded by Joey’s fit of laughter.
“I’m sorry,” he said, trying to muffle his giggles. “It’s just so absurd, because here you are losing your Powers, and you’re worried about me.” Meredith still didn’t understand Joey’s reaction to the situation, but she shrugged as though she did.
“I think—,” she started though couldn’t phrase her words correctly. She was becoming more distant from the human way of being, becoming more like the Archangels, and less like Joey. Meredith didn’t like it one bit, because somewhere deep within herself, she knew, just as Joey wasn’t supposed to end up in Hell, she wasn’t supposed to be a Guardian Angel.
“Perhaps you need some rest,” offered Joey, outstretching his hand for Meredith to take. “It must have take much Power to heal me from—,”
“Perhaps,” she shrugged, not wanting to go into the details again.
She took Joey’s hand and allowed him to guide her towards her bed. She felt peculiarly weak, not in a way that she was going to pass out, but in a way that she felt there was something missing within her, something which held her there with Joey. She shook it off and placed her head on the pillow, staring into Joey’s grey orbs as she lay down. She felt her uneven heartbeat increase pace as Joey’s worried eyes studied her face. She couldn’t place the emotions she felt toward Joey, but she knew they had nothing to do with her being his Guardian Angel. She was in love with this beautiful human being, and Meredith felt stripped of the chance to spend a human life with him.
Joey caressed her cheek as wetness appeared in her eyes. Neither of them understood the eeriness of the situation, and Joey wondered why Raphael, the Archangel of Healing, would tell Meredith to heal him, when he knew she would become weak and eventually lose her power. Of course, neither of them knew if she was losing her powers really. But Joey could see Meredith weaken before him, and steadily drift back to the girl he had found only days ago.
