CHAPTER 13
Raquel vanished into thin air, leaving Joey with an immobile Meredith in the middle of the fields. It was frightening, because Joey couldn’t hear her strange heartbeat, or find any indication of a pulse. Her eyes were open though, but it had turned to the back of her head, revealing only the white of her eyes. Joey thought she was dead, he was almost certain of it, but there was nothing he could do. He merely fell down to his knees, and cried over the limp corpse of Meredith.
But Meredith wasn’t dead.
She found herself in a dark room with only one small window, casting a ray of sunlight inside. She had no idea what she ought to be looking for, and for long moments, she merely lingered in her spot, indecisive in what she was supposed to do next. There was a door on the opposite side of the room from where she stood; a large red door with a silver doorknob. She was reluctant in approaching the door and opening it, but she knew there wasn’t anything else she could do. She knew she had to return to Joey as fast as she could.
She took diminutive, unhurried steps towards the door at the outset, scanning the area around her to make sure there was no threat. But even with the ray of sunlight shining through the little window, it was still too dark to see much. Her hand trembled as she reached out towards the doorknob, and Meredith could have sworn she felt the temperature drop. Her uneven heartbeat fastened, and she couldn’t help but inhale deeply to steady herself.
She opened the door and stepped over the threshold, scanning the long corridor from left to right. It was also dark in the corridor, but Meredith felt safer there than she had in the cramped, dark room. She closed her eyes for a minute, struggling to control her heartbeat. When she opened her eyes, she found the room behind her had disappeared, and the corridor consisted of many more doors. She searched within herself for her Aura, and the brilliant white and cerise shimmering lightened the area. She could see much better now, and when she looked down, she found an envelope at her feet, with her name written on the front. Cautiously, she picked up the envelope, and broke the wax seal at the back. She removed a piece of white paper, bordered with golden flowers and read:
Find the door that holds three things,
and among them all you’ll find your Wings. There was no name at the end of the note, but Meredith knew that it must be from either Raquel; the Archangel of Fairness and Justice, or God. The thought of either of them sent Meredith into a state of frenzy; her hands trembled immensely, tears formed in her eyes, and for a moment, she thought she was losing consciousness. But just before Meredith could completely lose her mind, she inhaled deeply again, and let the air whoosh out of her lungs. She knew she had to conquer this task on her own, no matter how much she wished that Joey was there by her side.
She swallowed, and decided on scanning all the room on her left-hand side first. She walked slowly down the corridor, to the very end, and decided she would work her way up. She stopped and turned towards the first door, but as her hand reached out towards the doorknob, another envelope appeared and she read:
