CHAPTER 11
Joey and Meredith were exhausted after the day’s overwhelming events, and after they had eaten and bathed, they each snuggled up in their own single beds, the light turned off. The moon which glistened through the window was the only source of illumination. Joey listened to Meredith’s jagged heartbeat, and placed his palm over his chest, recognizing the harmonization of their hearts. It had a soothing effect on Joey, though he still felt agitated and he knew sleep would not come for him that night. He kept thinking about the kiss, almost kiss, he and Meredith had shared in the hole in the ground. He could still feel her lips pressed against his, still feel the sparks of electricity dance on his lips.
I wonder if she felt it too, he thought to himself.
Of course, he wouldn’t ask Meredith that. Ever since they had returned to the little white house, both of them had avoided the subject. She was an Angel and he was a Demon-Hybrid; half the son of Lucifer.
He watched her as she lay perfectly still on her bed, her backside to his face. She was too still for someone who would be sleeping, but she was an Angel and he didn’t know how they slept, if they slept at all. But he watched as the moon’s light glistened against her dark shadowy hair, making it seem more like black than it did brown. She was perfect for Joey in so many ways, yet, they were like chalk and cheese, making them imperfect for one another too.
He had never felt these kinds of emotions before. He had merely turned fourteen when the accident occurred, when his family had died, when he was sent to Hell, when Phoebe disappeared—
He couldn’t help but wonder whether Phoebe was alive or not. He wanted so desperately to return to his former, normal life, to surrender to the Archangels and plead for them to change things back to the way it had been. But he had no idea whether the Archangels were capable of such deed or not. But as he watched Meredith, he knew he could never return to a life that didn’t entail her. If things should change back, he would never have met this extraordinary being, this girl with her bottomless black eyes, and her soft, naturally pink pouting lips. He would never have experienced these feelings if he had never met Meredith, and even if he did fall in love with someone else, he knew his life would have felt unfilled, one way or another.
But at present, Joey did feel as though he was missing something. It was as obvious as daylight that it was Phoebe whom he missed, but would he have chosen Phoebe over Meredith? If he could change things back to the way they were, would he be able to give up Meredith for his sister?
You can’t change a thing, no use in pondering over it, he told himself mentally.
He knew he couldn’t change anything back to the way things had been, and Joey had to accept his fate, admit to the life he now shared with Meredith, although it was dangerous and daring, even though he enjoyed the slight thrill he got when a fight came near, and even if he was the son of Lucifer, though not wholly, he knew he had to accept his lot. Everything was confusing, and as if it would help him sleep, he turned his back on Meredith and closed his eyes, still listening and feeling the strange beating of their hearts.
