CHAPTER 25
The expressions on the Archangels’ faces were concealed when Phoebe Olsen spoke. None of them knew how to respond; they hadn’t expected the words the Olsen sibling spoke. Meredith was the only one amongst those in the golden room, who showed expression; who knew exactly what needed to be done. But she couldn’t speak. She knew Joey was in Hell; she knew that she had to save him, but hearing the words aloud had a different effect on her.
She didn’t know what she was supposed to do.
“Did you hear me?” asked Phoebe, her voice reverberating with a kind of desperation. It burned in her eyes too. Her bottom lip quivered and tears started flowing down her cheeks. “Please,” she begged, but the word didn’t ricochet coherently, “you have to help my brother.”
“Yes,” said Meredith, and she turned to face, not all of the Archangels, but Michael.
“We cannot enter Hell,” said Michael, his eyes reflecting both fear and angst. He had tried to help Joey the night he met with the Demon, but he had no power. She was protected by Hell; and he didn’t want to assail when he was uncertain of the outcome.
“But I can,” said Meredith. “I can enter Hell.”
Her gaze was fixed on Janelle, and she could see the Guardian Angel shift her weight. She didn’t want to be in the spotlight, she didn’t want the Archangels to know that Meredith knew about the gateway in Heaven which led to Hell. She had told her solely because she wanted her back in Heaven. She had told Meredith and broke her oath to keep Heaven’s secrets just that; a secret.
“No,” said Michael, “I cannot trust the Guardian Angel to the Son of Lucifer.”
“Then who can you trust, Michael? I am not only the Guardian Angel to the Son of Lucifer, but also Joey Olsen. You heard Phoebe. He is fighting Lucifer; he is standing his ground against his vice.” There was silence as the occupants of the golden room stared between Michael and Meredith.
“How will you enter Hell, Meredith?” asked Michael. It was the first time he didn’t refer to Meredith in a disliking manner. “Because you are Angel, just as I, yet I cannot enter Hell.”
Meredith swallowed audibly.
“I am human too,” she said. “I am between Heaven and Hell.”
Joey stared into Lucifer’s frightening eyes, fighting back the urge to turn on his heels and make a run for it. He knew there was nowhere to go though. He was trapped, like a caged animal. He could feel the Son of Lucifer stir; he was scratching at the walls which Joey had put up to block him out. The Son of Lucifer was trashing about, and for a split second, Joey let his guard slip.
