CHAPTER 7

“Are you sure this is right Meredith?”

Joey studied the perfect writing on the piece of paper Meredith had given to him. He was baffled by the objects that they were looking for, because to him most of these things should not even exist.

“Yes,” she said, running her slender fingers through her dark hair, “I have to find my Wings for Guidance, my Golden Belt for Strength, my Halo for Knowledge, my Aura for Beauty and my Robe for Protection. These are the things that make me a Guardian Angel, I heard them say so.” She had been repeating herself for what seemed like a life span, but Joey couldn’t quite identify with the oddness of the situation.

“But are you sure?” he asked, rubbing his temple harshly.

“Yes,” she said hard-heartedly and walked hurriedly towards the Volkswagen Beetle. Joey followed and stared at the car in revulsion. Not only was it dreadfully time-consuming and heavy on fuel, but it reminded Joey of the old man who he had murdered, whose soul he had banished to Hell.

“I need to get rid of this car,” he said as he got into the driver’s seat. Meredith didn’t respond though, she simply prompted Joey to return to Devilsville.

“Such an odd, yet ironic name for the town, don’t you think?”

He nodded but didn’t respond.

They drove in silence all the way back to Devilsville. He was reluctant to return after Meredith’s demand that they should leave, because the Angels, no, the Archangels were going to find him and annihilate Joey ineradicably. But the desperation in her eyes told him that it was vital, and perhaps it was the only way for them to keep safe.

“How do you even know that these things exist? Don’t you think the Archangels know we were listening in on them, especially you? You don’t suppose it’s a trap, do you?”

“In all truth Joey, I have no idea,” she said and then bit down on her bottom lip.

“But it’s worth the shot?” he asked, and he knew he would do whatever it took to be safe again, to be able to live a human life.

“I think so, yes.”

It wasn’t all too convincing, but Joey knew if Meredith became an Angel again, she would be equipped to protect him. Perhaps she would be able to help him get Clara and Giovanni out of Hell too. And even if they don’t return to Earth in their human form, if they went to Heaven, if they were only at peace, at least that would be enough for him. He cringed at the thought of Clara in Hell.

“How does one become a Guardian Angel? I mean, you don’t remember much, I know, but do you know how one becomes a Guardian Angel?”
