CHAPTER 21
“Oh no, Meredith, please calm down.”
She lay on the sofa inside the old man’s house, looking up into Janelle’s sapphire eyes. She had just experienced a full-on panic attack, but Janelle and the dark-haired man couldn’t hide their interest. As much as they wanted Meredith to calm down, they also wanted to know how she was able to be Human.
“I’m alright,” said Meredith, pushing herself up from her laying position. Her head was still spinning out of control, but she had somehow found a way to balance herself.
“You’re doing it again,” said Janelle, staring both enviously and peculiarly at Meredith. “I wish you’d just tell me how.”
Meredith shot up from the sofa and marched toward the front door. She was not going to be probed and researched like some sort of lab rat. She didn’t have a clue as to what Janelle meant, and quite frankly, she didn’t care. The dark-haired man blocked her way again, but this time Meredith felt a surge of Power build up within her.
“If you do not move out of my way, I’m going to blast you back to where you came from.” The man swallowed profoundly and looked toward Janelle for aid. It was obvious to Meredith what he was now; he was a Demon.
Janelle rushed to Meredith’s side and led her toward the sofa once more. She had a maternal expression on her face, as though she truly wanted to help Meredith. But after all that had happened between her and Joey and the Archangels, and even the other Angels who had been with Phoebe Olsen, Phoebe, the Guardian Angel, Meredith trusted the Demon more than she trusted any Angel. But deep within her, Meredith could feel that she could trust the Angels, because they were her specie, they were her family.
“Can I enter Hell or not?” asked Meredith, her infinite black eyes boring into Janelle’s sapphire orbs. “Because if I cannot, I will kill you and your Demon friend and Heaven and Hell will only then have a reason for disarray.”
“Meredith,” whispered Janelle. She took Meredith’s hands into hers and looked desperately into her eyes. “Sister, you cannot kill. You are an Angel, and Angels do not kill other Angels. Do you not remember your pledge? Do you not remember the oath you had sworn upon?”
“I remember nothing,” shouted Meredith, shoving Janelle’s hands out of hers. “The Archangels have not given me a chance to explain all that has happened. They do not see and neither do you. I have no control over being Human or Angel, but Joey Olsen does, and he chooses to be Human.”
“I don’t believe it.”
“But it’s the truth, sister.” Meredith was shocked by herself to have called Janelle her sister, but she didn’t seem affected by it. She merely stood up and walked towards the Demon, whispering something into his ear. “If you are going to conspire, let me be. Kill me if you must, but do not treat me as though I am a fool.”
