I WOKE UP WITH A START. My alarm clock was buzzing loudly, and I quickly clicked it off, rubbing the  sleep out of my eyes as I realized I had to get ready to school. I was so not a morning person, but I'd have to deal with it today.

Pushing myself to get out of bed, I hurriedly grabbed the clothes I had laid on my desk chair the night before, took a hot shower, got dressed, and ran downstairs to eat breakfast keeping my eye on the clock. My mom had remembered what my favorite breakfast food is and prepared it this morning: bagels and cream cheese, fruit salad, and fried eggs. She set the plate down on the table ornamented with all my favorite morning goodies and I smiled in appreciation, though I was still too asleep to say much to her or anyone yet.
High school orientation is today! And I'm a freshman! I kept thinking this excitedly, but I also had a very bad feeling of scary nervousness inside of me too. High school had come along in my life all too soon and almost without my realizing it.

I boarded the school bus half an hour later after literally running out the door, and found a spot near the back. All the upperclassmen sat up at the front of the bus, that was as much as I knew; and I didn't want to cause any trouble with a junior or senior who might be annoyed by my taking his or her place. Then I saw Ana, my new friend I had met volunteering at vacation bible school last summer at her church.

"Hi, Ana!"

Ana caught my eye and smiled. "Hi Hannah!"

I smiled back. Ana was a great new friend, and I was sure we'd get really close in time. Ana was really shy for the time being, though, since she had just recently arrived from France with her family, so for now I was always the one who had to initiate a conversation. But I didn't mind. Ana was the sweetest, most considerate girl I had ever met.

"Nervous for the start of high school today?" I asked as I settled in my seat beside her.

"Yes, very. But I am glad I know you, it will be so much easier. Plus we're in so many of the same classes!" Ana said this all rather slowly and in her delightful foreign accent. She had just arrived from France only three months before, and although she knew the English language pretty well, due to her shyness, she always seemed to just make certain she was pronouncing everything correctly before she spoke.

"I know! I am so happy we are in so many of the same classes! Plus I will be very happy to ask you for help in French class if you wouldn't mind me asking every so often." I winked at my friend.

"Oh, yes!" Ana's eyes sparkled. Talking of anything that connected Anna to her homeland always made her smile and look rather radiant. "I would love to help you with French if you ever need it."

"I believe I will  definitely need it at some point." I laughed. It was nice to have at least one good friend to be with. My old friends, twins Molly and Riley, were going to a different school this year. I knew I'd miss seeing them everyday and doing so much together. But they had all promised to text me every day and hang out every weekend they could with me. I was glad I had my friend Ana with me today at the new school no matter what though.

I said a quick prayer asking that the day and year would go well as the bus stopped in front of the school. Help me always to be true to my beliefs, strong, courageous, kind and loyal. Help me to do well at Edison High God and keep away any bullies, I prayed, trying not to get overly nervous as my brain took a brief flashback to when I was an eleven year old around bullies...
