Chapter 1
Star Bucks is overrated. I thought this as I sat down my cardboard cup of over-priced, half-assed coffee. Jimmy had asked me to meet me down at the Star Bucks at the bottom of 30 Rock to do some catching up. I had been away shooting a movie down south and we hadn't seen each other for 5 months, which was a record breaking time for us. We were best friends. Veterans of SNL, we were 27 years old and both were working on our movie careers. No matter what though, we were best friends.
"Where the hell is Timberlake? I'm gonna order without him this time!" Jimmy said frustrated.
"Oh stop, you never order without him." I said taking a sip out of my coffee.
Scrunching up his nose and laughing, "Shut up! At least I have manners and wait for people!"
We just went on talking about how our lives were going, even though we both knew what each other was going to say, for we had been talking every day for the past 5 months since I was gone. As we told our usual corny jokes, a very sweaty and disheveled Justin Timberlake came running in.
"Hey guys, sorry about that. I got plowed over by fans when I rounded the corner."
"Ahhh the rock star life." Sighed Jimmy resting his head on his hand and looking dreamy at Justin.
Leaning back in his chair laughing, "Hahaha fuck off man."
After a good laugh, Jimmy went up and ordered him and Justin food. I looked up to talk to Justin and just as I was about to, his phone rang with a text.
"Shit, its Lorne. I gotta go. Someone must have told him a snuck out. Could you maybe..."
"Yeah yeah I gotcha. This is the last time though! He's gonna catch on soon!"
Half running out the door, "YOU KNOW I LOVE YOU!!"
Looking around the store and putting my hands up, "I've never seen that man before in my life!"
The few people in the store laughed and then went back to their coffees. I took a quick look at my phone before Jimmy came back. Ahhh no messages. That's how I like it. It couldn't have been perfect timing when a message came through from my old friend Jamie.
"Hey I saw your mom yesterday and she said you're done with the movie and are coming back for the holiday! Since my parents are going away, me and Tom are having a party at the pond. Lemme know if you're in."
Wow. A party at the pond. Those used to be the highlight of my childhood summers. My parents friends owned a pond and built a pavilion and would have a whole bunch of people camp out.
Just after I read the message, I saw Jimmy out of the corner of my eye just standing there looking down at me. I looked up slowly and said, "May I help you?"
Slamming the tray of food down on the table, "THIS IS THE THIRD TIME THIS MONTH!"
"Eh, he's hosting SNL this week. Cut him some slack. You just know Lorne is riding his ass like a bull."
"Well what the hell am I gonna do with all of his food?"
"Uhhhh, have you just met me? I'll eat it!"
Pushing the tray over to me, I quickly grabbed the muffin and cinnamon bread off and held them closely to me.
Almost shocked, Jimmy chuckled and said, "It's so great to have you back. I really missed you!"
"I missed you so much too. I can't live too long without my Jimmy!"
In a woman's voice, holding up his hands to form a heart, "BFFs?"
Doing the same and putting my hands to my heart, "BFFs. Hey what are you and Nancy doing for the 4th of July?"
"She's going to be out of town again, so I guess hanging with you haha."
"Awesome. I just got a text from Jamie that she and her brother are having a huge party at their house. Wanna go?"
"Uhhh hell yeah? Is it by your house?"
"Yeah I'm gonna head down there tomorrow to say hello to family and stay there until Sunday. Do you want to drive down with me and we can stay at my house down there?"
"Well I have to fly out to Cali for a meeting with Jay about the show. You live kinda close to an airport right?"
"Yeah do you want to fly to the airport by my house and I'll bring you back?"
"Yeah that sounds great."
I looked down at my phone as it lit up with a notification that I got a text from my boyfriend Eddy. I tried to quickly swipe the notification off the screen before Jimmy saw, but I couldn't get it past him.
"Was that Eddy?" He said with knowing.
"That was Eddy."
"How have you two been."
"I'd like to talk about something else."
Nodding his head and pressing his lips together in a slight frown, he furrowed his eye brows and looked at me. "I understand. I know something is up and you'll talk to me about it when you're ready. So what would you like to talk about?"
I crossed my arms and rested them on the table. I knew where this was going, but I wanted to see if I got anything different. "Why has Nancy been leaving all the time? Are you guys fighting?"
Finishing his muffin, "No, I guess she's really busy with work. I don't know."
Damn. Still clueless.
"Oh. Maybe I'll text her tonight to see what's new. I should go though, I gotta go pack."
I gathered up my purse, phone and gave Jimmy money for breakfast which he immediately shoved back into my hand.
"The gentleman always pays for meals."
"Well look who drew the short stick. Being best friends with a loser that has no manners."
"You're referring to you, right? Hey at least you're not as complete of a loser as Timberlake whom I have never been able to have a complete meal with..."
I looked at him over my shoulder and let out a chuckle and he reciprocated with a head nod and a look down at his shoes.
Motioning for me to leave, "Get out of here. I'll call you tonight!"
And with that I was out the door.
Once I was out of sight of Jimmy, I pulled my phone out of my pocket and checked the text from Eddy. My heart began to hurt as I read.
It read:
"I know I lost control. I know I said it'd never happen again. I just want to meet with you."
I stood there staring at the message for a while longer and out my phone away. I looked around took a deep breath, and headed up the stairs to get to my car that was waiting for me. The thought of what had happened still fresh in my mind.
