"You...you want me to come in first? Alone?" Jimmy managed to force out of his mouth. He stood at the doorway biting his lip and looking in Lorne's direction but not quite at Lorne. I, I was stranded in the middle of Lorne's office between the two of them. I felt like I was standing between a mother bear and her cub, like a massive fight was going to break out and I would be stuck right in the middle of all of it.
"Yes, James. You may come in first." He looked to me now, "Jess," he motioned to the door, "if you wouldn't mind waiting outside until I'm finished with James, it'd be much appreciated." I slowly backed up and turned around to head out the door. I saw Jimmy's face. I had never seen it turn red, but this was a shameful red. I walked to where he was by the door and I was about to wish him good luck when he pulled me in close to him by my arm and whispered ever so softly, "He's not going to stop me from being with you." He let my arm go out of his clammy grasp immediately after and continued on to Lorne's desk.
I was shaken a little bit about what he had just said to me. If Lorne threatened to knock Jimmy out of his spot for Late Night, I wouldn't be able to stay with him out of good conscience. Jimmy was made for that job and everyone freaking knew it. But, if Lorne was punishing him, then he would never stand a chance.
I collected myself and reached out and grabbed both the door handles. I heard Lorne's voice from behind me, "Ah Jess, that won't be necessary." He reached where I was and shut the doors in front of me. If that was some way of him asserting his dominance over me, he was going a little too far. Wow. What a boss. That pissed me off a little bit. He didn't even know the whole god damn story and he was already trying to show his authority over me.
I stomped away from the doors and leaned my back on the wall where I slid down to the floor and rested my head on the wall behind. It was silent for a little bit which really bothered me. I could feel Jeremy staring at me from where he stood to "guard" the doors. What a little prick. I shot him a nasty look just to remind him that he was just that, a little prick. He took it and shot one back at me.
I put my head back to lean on the wall again. Silence was in the air again. Then, clear as day, I could hear all of Lorne and Jimmy's conversation. I could hear it as if I was right there in the room with them. I got up and walked over to where Jeremy was standing. The door was open just a little crack but enough to where sound could easily escape.
"Maybe you should think about closing those doors." I hissed at Jeremy.
"I think they're fine just the way they are." He hissed back in my face.
"What ever you piece of shit. It's your damn job."
"You and I both know that I'm never going to get fired from this job."
"Yeah yeah yeah. Fuck off." I swatted my hand at him as I made it back to my spot on the wall. "Prick." I mumbled to myself.
I tried to block the obvious conversation from my head, but like I said. It was like I was right there!
"So. You realize that any type of scandal or even a direct order from me will take you right out of the spot for next host of Late Night, correct?" Lorne said in his Canadian accent that made his sound like he had marbles in his mouth.
"Yes. I understand."
"Then what're you doing, James?"
"I'm not doing anything wrong here." I could hear the timidness in Jimmy's voice.
"Yes you are as far as the media knows. How long has this fling even been going on for?"
"She's not a fling..." I could barely hear him at this point. I couldn't help but finding myself leaning in closer and closer so I could hear what they were saying better.
