"Did you hear what I said?" Lorne said in astonishment as he yanked himself away from me. I was utterly confused. I had absolutely no idea what was going on.
"Well?"
"You-- you said you did everything that you could..." I said with tears still lingering in my eyes.
He took a step back and threw his hands out to his sides. "Who do you think I am?"
Seth and I both looked to each other and concluded that Lorne had gone absolutely insane. Seth was standing there with a look of utter confusion on his face with his eyes curiously fixed on Lorne and arms crossed protectively across his chest.
I cautiously replied, "You're uh... well... you're Lorne Michaels..."
"That's right I am!" The smirk he had across his face began to grow into a grin and he proceeded to look to the open doors at the security guards.
Still baffled as to what he was doing, I dried my eyes so I could see what was going to happen next. The security guards motioned for someone to come in and it was Logan. One of my best friends from high school that I had last seen at the 4th ofJuly camp out. He was dressed in his NYPD Blues and stood at the entrance of Lorne's office with a soft look on his face. He wasn't distraught. He was sweaty and he looked as if he had been in a fight.
"Jess, your boss is quite the man." He said with a deep and firm law enforcement voice.
"Yeah. I know he is." I quickly shot a glance over to Lorne who was now briskly walking out of his office.
"He did all he could do." Logan couldn't help but break a smile which made his voice crack just the slightest bit. He came over and gave me a sudden hug and stood beside me. Seth was at my side as well.
Lorne walked in with his hand firmly grasped around another man's arm. As Lorne entered the office, the other man followed. I could hardly believe what I was seeing. It was Jimmy. His white t-shirt was stained with blood and his neck was covered with bandages. He looked flushed, but, clearly, able to stand.
Upon seeing him, I immediately dropped to my knees and covered my mouth. I was Logan and Seth's feet peering up at Jimmy. Both Logan and Seth brought me to my feet with ease just as Jimmy began to make his way over to me with the help of Lorne. I ran the rest of the way to him and embraced him in that hug that I never thought we would share again.
When our bodies collided, I was careful not to touch his bandages and to not injure him any further. But, I couldn't help it. I never wanted our bodies to be separated again.
He made a pained face and gasped out, "Careful, sweetie. Careful." I grabbed his face and planted the deepest kiss on those lips that I'd fallen in love with since the moment I met them. A slow clap began as Jimmy and I stood in the middle of Lorne's office just as if it were the two of us.
I felt a hand on my shoulder and peeled my head out of the crook of Jimmy's shoulder enough to see Lorne smiling back at me. He made that famous Lorne Face and proudly stated, "See? I told you I would do all that I could." Everyone in the room let out a hearty laugh and Jimmy and I, simultaneously, reached our arms out and brought him into the hug.
"I said I take care of my kids and I meant it." His voice was muffled in Jimmy's arm but I could make out what he was saying.
Within a few moments, I peered up to see where Seth was in the room. By now, medics, detectives, patrolmen, NY State Troopers, and all of the above had flooded into the room. My eyes came across Seth who was talking with a medic. I saw him nod and turn around so that the medic could help him take off his jacket. He allowed his arm to go limp and the medic gently peeled his jacket off and threw it to the side. He turned back around and revealed a blood stained t-shirt and the majority of the blood was centered at the top of his shoulder.
