Mei slammed her hand against the mirror of the woman's restroom in outrage, startling a number of women before she made a quick exit to her car so as to not make a scene. She tried to force herself to remain calm, and regain her senses but it seemed completely useless as of now.
Shu understood what was needed to put Yan Su away for good, but Mei could also completely understand why that girl decided to back out of testifying. As much as she wanted to try and per sway Shu into doing it Mei had to respect the girl's wishes.
For now though Mei had nothing to work with, the only thing she could do for now was head home and see if she could find anyone else willing to try and testify against Yan Su. But the likelihood of that happening was extremely small.
With a sigh she got into her car and drove to her apartment complex. It was a modest size of a place with good rent considering how these days a normal thing like rent could become harder and harder to do by the year. Heading inside the building Mei and saw the building owner sitting in a lawn chair out front with a book in hand, he was always kind to her, a man of middle age who always offered her a kind smile.
"It looks like someone has had a bad day," he said to her with a slight smile.
"Evening Mr. Tao," she said to him with a wary sigh and a small smile of her own as she changed the subject. "Did anything new happen for today?"
"Nothing all that grand," he said. "Although, there was something interesting..."
"Really? What's that?"
"I saw a foreigner with the most striking of blue eyes. Seeing others from different countries are not uncommon anymore but those eyes was something wonderful to see. You should have seen it." The way he spoke sounded airy as if he were talking about finding an ancient treasure that mankind had yet to understand. He then changed and offered her a kind smile. "If you ever feel the need to just sit back and relax I'll always have a chair for you."
Mei laughed slightly at the airy tone he used, it surprised her really. After all that had happened thus far, any sense of humor seemed far from her mind. Yet Tao always somehow managed to make her smile or laugh, it was something he was always able to do, it was part of who he was no matter who he talked too. It was because of this, all the tenants in his building loved him.
"Well I would, but then I'd be out of a job. So why was this foreigner so interesting?"
"Like I said Ms. Lin, it was the eyes, in fact the kid came into the building, seemed to be looking for someone."
That made Mei pause.
"The person was a kid?"
Tao shrugged modestly. "Well more in the teens, but anyone younger than twenty four is considered to still be a kid to me at least."
In that moment, Mei recalled the girl who had been talking to Shu, and seeing those striking blue eyes of her's. She shook her head at the thought, there were many people in the world who were born with blue eyes it couldn't have been the same person.
"I'm going to head up, I'll talk to you later Mr. Tao." She then began to head off only to stop when Tao called out.
"Best to take the stairs, the elevator is busted, but if things go well it should be back up and running by tomorrow."
Great, she thought to herself with annoyance. Another thing to add to my list of crap for today... it's just one thing after another isn't it? She smiled at him though regardless of her internal thoughts. "Thank you Mr. Tao." She then quickly headed into the building and up the stairs to the seventh floor; she paused for a moment to catch her breath. It wasn't the first time she climbed a number of floors, though because of that it made her remember why she wasn't doing all too well recently.
