What the heck is this? Mei thought with surprise as she looked at Li-Fu Wong with slight shock, while Li-Fu on the other hand merely offered a slight sad smile.
"I understand you're surprise, but you don't have to be that shocked. You must have come to some kind of conclusion that someone you've spoken too before wished to talk to you again at some point."
"I..." Mei began only to stop and make her way over to the two women and sat down across from them. "I thought you didn't wish to do anything in regards to Yan Su, at least that's what you told me last year."
Li-Fu was quite her gaze shifting away from Mei for a moment before letting out a sigh and looking right at her. "I know when we last spoke I said that I wanted nothing to do with this. That I just wanted to forget that it ever happened and move on with my life. That he would be caught one day and charged with the fullest extent of the law, only now realizing how naive that was of me to even thing. The law is more corrupt than ever in the past ten years." She laughed sarcastically. "I mean look at our relations with China, things are even more unstable then before, the whole incident with the book sellers is still going on to this day."
Mei felt a slight twinge of regret, back when she had to deal with the rape the same thought came into her mind, and it was something that Mei had done in order to move on when so many people blocked her way causing her to give up and move on. That was until Ming Yon committed suicide the following month.
Some would say that it was pathetic that a girl would choose death over living, but every person was different, no one would react the same way in any situation. And Ming was no different, in school she was very timid and shy, apologizing over the smallest of things. And after she had been raped Ming had become a complete nervous wreck, unable to go to class or her part time job, unable to be near any man even if it was a friend.
It got to the point where Ming was unable to even leave her dorm room, even after telling the police, which failed in doing nothing. She just completely secluded herself, and a few days after that Ming was found in her room on her bed in good dress clothes dead. Committing suicide by the use of sleeping pills that she owned.
Her roommate found her, had thought to leave her alone and talk to her after a few days only to scream for the police and call for help, not long after it was all over the campus, people began to wonder if it was really true, but then just as it came about it vanished into obscurity like everything else in the world. There had been a trial but all evidence that led to Ming's death simply vanished without so much as an investigation as to why. Since then Mei did everything in her power to climb up in her field of work to put those who did such horrible things in jail. She refused to back down regardless of the case; she would always stand for the victim, even if that victim was no longer alive.
It was her job to serve justice to those who thought they were above the law, it wouldn't always work out, that much was true, but she was too determined and hard headed to call it quits.
At least that's how it was until recent events...
"I understand where you are coming from," Mei told her. "However, my boss has informed me that our law firm will no longer be able to take cases linked to Yan Su, regardless of who wishes to charge him."
Li-Fu frowned at this. "What do you mean? I was told that your firm was one of the best in regards to going to trial against Yan Su."
"I wouldn't really say that considering the events with Yan Su, every case I've tried against him I've always failed and he's let go. What's more, my law firm won't be perusing him anymore while my boss has put me on a mandatory brake."
