Only, she was.

"The Titanic took over 40 tons of potatoes on her maiden voyage, " she said happily.

"Yes," Desmond said quietly, "I knew that."

"Damn it," she muttered under her breath; she needed to out smart him.

"Also, it took 23 tons of soap just to get it into the water!" She added hopefully.

He looked at her sympathetically, "That's just the soap. They also used tons of whale oil, and-"

"Alright class is dismissed!" Ms.Garètte beckoned.

He sat down with her and Bella during science,  and they basically had a Titanic showdown. Desmond will always be superior,  but Alice had to try.

"I may have taken some light notage," she said slipping her full notebook his way.

He smiled, "Surprised you don't have the one about how only 12 people died on construction."

"Wow," she started sarcastically,  "only twelve people."

He scribbled it under her note about the band playing as it sunk. She blushed and made her way back to Bella. Before they knew it, class was over. As she rushed out the door she crashed into Bella, knocking her stuff over, meanwhile Desmond hit the door frame. In a split second, she had to make a decision to help her best friend, or go for the cute romance scene. Without thinking, she dived for Bella's binder and helped her up. Desmond was already out the door, as were her chances. She immediately regretted her decision.

In home base, Lucas nipped her notebook from her sac.

"Hey!" She said lunging for it, but he had already seen all the notes.

He looked at her in disbelief, "you're pathetic." He tossed it in the waste basket. She instinctively dug it out and shoved it back into place. She wasn't going to let him dampen her high spirits.

Days went by and she felt more sure about Desmond than she had about anybody, short of Keith - that was magic. He was the one to stitch her broken heart back together. He wasn't Jeremy, but he was his own person. He was Desmond. She decided it was time to tell him how she felt, only she  wasn't going to. Bella was.

"So, can we go over the plan one more time?" Bella clapped.

"Fine," Alice rehearsed, "You sit by him in the gym at free time, while I go and "study with Samantha.""

"Then I say-?"

"You say, 'Desmond, Alice really likes you, you know.'"

"And if he freaks out?"

"'HAH! You should see your face; you thought I was being serious."

"Got it. And if he doesn't?"

"Ask if he likes me back, of course."

"You got it." So they waited for him to scrape, but he never did.

"What do we do? He won't be in free time."

"You go with our friends, Alice. Ill stay here and handle this."

So Alice went off with the group, staring emptily at Desmond and Bella.  She hoped it was going well. She saw Bella scrape, and by the look on her face, it hadn't.

"What happened?" She felt like crying.

"Well,"

"Don't sugarcoat it."

"He doesn't like you."

"What did he say?"

And Bella relived it for her.

"Hey, Desmond." Bella said quietly.

"What's up?"

"You know, Alice really likes you."

"Is that so?"

"Yes...is that...good, bad?" She was even doing the hand motions.

"Eh," he only shrugged.

"Well...do you...like her back?"

"No, I'm looking to stay single right now." And that's when Bella scraped.

"Oh, no!" Alice cried, "he thinks you were asking him out for me!" And shortly they saw Desmond enter, but instead of sitting with her like normal, he just walked away and sat down by himself. Alice felt like she was going to burst. Why was this happening to her?

A single tear struck her cheek, "A girl can't compete with a locomotive. "
