Alice had written out her second note the night before.
"Don't underestimate me
LUCAS HAFFLER ♥
I realize I forgot to tell you how to reply. Tape your note to the underside of your desk in science. I'll find it tomorrow.
-anon (yes, means anonymous)"
Only this time, she put it in a bright pink envelope and stamped it with a black heart. Under the heart she wrote: Don't miss this one.
Alice had planned on having Bella slip it in his locket after school, but she anticipated, and in science she whispered to Bella, loudly enough for lucas to overhear, "Can i open this now?"
"Open what?" Lucas butt in.
She slid it towards him, but when he tried to snatch it, she jerked it back to herself, "this was in my locker." She opened it, and immediately burst into laughter.
"What is it?" Lucas whispered.
"I think this is meant for you," she said sheepishly, flipping it over so that his large name showed.
He immediately grabbed it, ripping it into pieces, "this is stupid. "
"You have to reply!" Bella pushed.
"Yeah, maybe they'll tell you who they are."
"Fine, " he said, and scribbled out something and slid it to her. Her heart raced. She always expected these situations to end in her and Lucas skipping off into the sunset or something more reasonable like that, but in her heart she knew it was going to be what she read a few seconds after.
'Who are you? Stop this. It's creepy.'
"Tape it under the desk," Lucas called to her. She crumpled it in her hand. As they were leaving, Lucas called out to her. "You do it?"
She nodded, but as soon as he turned around she dropped it into the trashcan. They walked into math and realized that they had a huge test. She had been so worried about the stupid letters and the history howl that she hadn't studied at all. She sat down and stared at the paper on her desk. She looked at it in confusion, waiting for it to make sense. The numbers were growing fuzzy. Her head was pounding. The room was spinning, she had to get out of here, so she did. She just walked out. She collapsed down the wall, in the hallway beside the water fountain. It was leaking, and like the drops of water falling from its mouth guard, the same wetness began to seep from in between her eyelashes. She wiped them away when she heard a door open down the hall. Lucas appeared around the corner. He sat down beside Alice on the floor and put his arm around her.
"What's wrong?" He asked.
"Those equations were practically foreign. I didn't study at all, i-"
"Alice, I don't mean to be rude, but I truly don't think a stupid test is what you're so worked up about."
She sniffled.
"May I ask a question?"
Her heart fluttered, "ask away."
"Did you write those letters?" Her heart sank.
She didn't respond.
He looked into her deep blue eyes and asked again.
"Okay," she leaned into his shoulder blade, "I wrote them both. It was a joke. I can't believe you took it seriously." She blinked back tears.
"Knock knock."
"Lucas this is not the-"
"Knock. Knock." He said again.
"Who's there?"
"Boo."
"Boo who?"
"Don't cry. It's just a joke. " he mimicked.
She laughed, but then the situation hit her and she frowned again.
"Was it really a joke? That's the worst joke ever..." he trailed off.
"Yes, I'm sorry." She lied.
"Well, that's a shame." He turned to face her, "When you said okay, I was going to ask you something else, but I guess it's no matter now. It was just a joke."
"What, wait." She wiped her eyes. Her heart was racing like a speeding Cadillac on the highway right before it gets pulled over for the last time. "What were you going to ask?"
"Will you be my girlfriend?"
"Wait, what?" She croaked. "I know I said it was a joke, but would that offer happen to still be on the table?"
"Depends on what your answer would be."
"What if my answer would be yes?"
"Then yes. So what is your answer?"
"Of course." She cried, hugging him tightly. He scooted back.
"It wasn't a joke," she whispered.
"I know," he said laughing.
"I had no idea you-"
"I guess we all have things to hide."
