The night in the window was not Lucas' last appearance. Alice was visited by him every night as she slept. Her dreams were always lucid; and she soaked in every second of it. Her heart shattered every morning as she slowly lost grip and faded into consciousness. The one the night before was particularly realistic, and she sat wide eyed for almost twenty minutes after waking, just recounting it.
As if it were any other day, she sat on the bus, her feet vibrating as it accelerated. Beside her was Lucas. He stared happily out the window. The smile on his face forever stained her heart. Randomly, he brought up her letters. "I knew it was you the whole time."
"Sure you did," she rolled her eyes.
"I admit, you were a good actress in the beginning, but-"
"But what?"
His face flushed, "I don't know, nevermind. I just knew."
He was being so peculiar. She loved it. "But you're right, I was a pretty good actress." She felt herself smiling now.
"Yeah, especially with the pestering me to let you read it. I had no idea it was you, yet. You were just as annoying as you always are." He playfully pushed her arm.
"I didn't think about all the connections you would make with me answering your questions. The "yes, anon means anonymous." and all? I thought you'd just think they were a creepy stalker."
"I'm smarter than you think."
"I know," she felt her face growing hot, "I underestimated you."
"You sure did, and I can't believe it's all over now..."
"What?" She didn't know she was in a dream, but now she did. She felt herself slipping. This had been so real. She didn't want it to end. At the last second, as everything went blurry, she grabbed him and kissed him. There were no consequences in the dream world. His soft lips were the last thing she felt as she sat up at six o'clock in her bed. As she got on the bus she remembered something...Kissing...Her heart sank as the memories of Lucas' funeral flooded her brain - Tyler. What was that? They were both just releasing the stress unto each other, probably...but that didn't make it haunt her any less. She trembled with the thought that maybe she liked it. What was she doing? She stepped off the bus and was followed by Tyler who had unboarded the one behind her.
"There's been something I was meaning to give you for Christmas, I forgot." He mentioned it so casually like nothing had ever happened between them. Her stomach flipped in her torso.
"I got you something too," she replied, pulling out a Zelda necklace and handing it to him. His fingers brushed hers as he took it in his hand.
"Thank you so much!" He cried, opening the door for them both and walking in.
"It was no problem, I was shopping anyway..." Had nothing ever happened? Was all of it a dream?
"Here. These are for you," he said handing her a few old ds games from the pawnshop. It wasn't the fifty-five dollar posable link statue that he got for his girlfriend, but it meant just as much. She shoved them in her bag while thanking him, and ran off down the hallway to catch up with Sam, but something in her stopped when she heard his voice from behind.
She swiveled when she heard, "Alice, why did you kiss me? Don't pretend like it didn't happen."
"You aren't exactly taking your own advice. You have a girlfriend, why didn't you push me away?"
"Maybe I didn't want to," he whispered coming closer to her.
She stared into her eyes, but her joking smile fell into a deathly glare. "Maybe you should have!" She stomped off this time without looking back.
