Alice and Sam were practicing for the history bowl with all of the free time they had.

"In 2004," legislature passed a resolution adopting this as the state locomotive." Sam read.

"Shay Number Five Locomotive. " Alice replied calmly.

"It's actually still the state's locomotive," Desmond chimed in.

"I know," Alice ran her fingers through her hair nervously. She just knew the fact, in black and white. She was working her way into a grey area.

"Yeah," Desmond continued, and Sam scooted away, "I was there to see the last bolt put in that baby."

Alice clapped her hands to her cheeks. She didn't know what he was talking about, but she could hear the tinge of ecstasy in his voice. He loved his train jargon.

"I swear it was a bigger celebration than the launching of The Titanic."

In efforts to impress him by putting the train above this ship, she said, "Well DUH, it's just The Titanic. "
Little did she know, the Titanic was his second favorite topic.

His face rang with quiet disgust, "Yes...Well," and he walked away, taking his seat in the science lab. She sat down next to Bella and sunk into the floor.

"I blew it," she muttered under Ms.Vernon's lecture.

"You didn't blow it..."

"I blew it."

"I bet I can save it," she suggested helpfully.

"How?" Alice would do anything.

"DESMOND!" Bella called across the room.

"What are you doing?" Alice muttered.

"Hm?"

"WHEN DID THE TITANIC SINK?" Bella shouted.

"1912!" He called back excitedly.

Bella looked at Alice cheerfully.

"What good did that do?" Alice said with a sigh.

"Just wait," Bella whispered. Moments later, Desmond appeared at their table.

"What are you guys working on?"

"Oh nothing, Alice here's just been studying The Titanic."

"Oh really?" He said.

'I have' Alice said with her eyes to Bella, who only nudged her. "Yes, I have." He looked at them, full of suspicion. Alice blushed.

"Anything I can help with?"

"Yes, actually-" Bella started.

"NO!" Alice shouted, "I mean, no thank-you. I've got it."

"Great," he said walking away, "good luck."

Alice smiled, "You're a genius."

"And you've got a lot of work to do."

Alice ran home excitedly and plopped open her notebook. She drew diagram after diagram, wrote fact after fact. She needed to do this. The next day, she wouldn't be the idiot.
