To start the day Alice through on a beautiful white dress. It was covered in Lacy White daisies, and had a silky underlayer. It had a cut in the back that reconnected at the tall of the back by two pearly buttons. It was gorgeous, but something felt off. Alice decided to try back and forth girly dressing, and taking a more masculine approach. She wanted to see how it felt to be both things before deciding any further. She had to cover her back, so she threw on a red and blue flannel with red converse to match. Her day was like any other. In homebase, Lucas unfolded a small scrap of blue paper. She watched his eyes light up with confusion.
"What does it say?" Sam asked.
"Check my first note," he read, "And it has a heart on it."
"Where did that come from?" Alice asked, but she knew where it came from. She shoved it into his locker when he didn't notice the first letter.
"It was in my locker. Probably a mistake." He dismissed the importance of it, tossing it into the waste bucket.
Alice frowned, "What first note?"
"I guess they had left one before this." He shrugged.
"Well, why don't you ask to go look? I'm sure it's in there somewhere. Your locker is a dumpster. "
"Mr.Smiles?" He said turning around, "may I go get my notebook? I need it for homework. Its in my locker. "
He came back two minutes later with a pretty oragami envelope marked with a heart - Alice's heart. She blushed.
"What in the world is that?!" She exclaimed.
"It wasn't hard to find at all. I don't know how I missed it. " they all burst into laughter.
"What does it say?" Sam asked.
"I don't know," he said shoving the paper into his pocket, "I'm going to read it later. "
"Why?!" Alice whined,"I want to read it now!" This went on for almost an hour.
"If you keep whining I won't tell you what it says at all!" He shouted.
"Fine," and she dropped it. They walked out into the open cafeteria and sat with Alice's partial friend Trevor. They'd been talking a lot lately..
"Hey," he said, scooting over to sit as close to Alice as possible.
"Uh, hey." She muttered. The air was awkward.
They talked for a while about random things, and at one point Trevor accidentally referred to Alice as a boy.
"I'm sorry, I mean-" she didn't need this apology, for her eyes were lit with delight, not offense, but he continued, "lady."
Alice shrugged.
"Gender neutral organism! " he said jokingly and Lucas reminded them of the survey they had filled out earlier in social studies for the state.
"Gender: I'm not sure," he mocked from memory. It had been one of the options, under: female, male, unbinary, transgender ftm, and transgender mtf.
"Hey," Trevor said defensively, "don't joke about that. Some people choose it for a reason."
"I'm not sure what my gender is, let me check-" he said, looking in his trousers.
Trevor's smile faded into a scowl, "stop it. Its a real thing. Some people just aren't sure." He looked at Alice. She hadn't ever told anyone of her confusion, but she felt like he could read right through her walls.
Lucas stopped laughing.
"Anyway!" Alice shouted, breaking the tension. "Tell me what was in the letter." Trevor questioned it, and she explained everything.
The argument continued.
"I have a proposal," Trevor started, "I will give you these 3 3ds games if you tell her." Why was he like this lately? All he did was stick up for Alice and he seemed like the only person who really respected her. Lucas was pondering it.
"No!" Alice cried. "You can't do that! It's not that important!" she slid the games toward him again, and he though the games weren't still in her fingers, he touched her hand. He looked at her for a moment, and she jerked her hand away. He quickly made a move for the cartridges. what was that about?
"Well," Lucas stated, "no game, no letter."
