I was terrified. We never spent more than 2 days without talking. And that one time, when he went camping for 2 weeks without a telephone, I missed his voice so much. When I finally heard it relieved me. I know I was probably overreacting, but it felt that way. Now, it's been 2 ½ weeks since the accident and I was going crazy.
"Hi Dr Gibson." I said. He was Adam's neurosurgeon. He came in with a few doctors, residents to be precise, learning about my dead-but-not-dead-best-friend.
"Hi Parker. Drs, this is Adam Smith and his friend Parker Miller. Can someone present Mr Smith?" He asked the doctors as Maia Peters, who was 25 years old and looked like she was over caffeine raised her hand. "Yes. Dr Peters."
"Adam Smith. 20 year-old male, car accident. Multiple bone fractures and brain damage, fractures fixed in surgery. He's been in a deep coma for 18 days and there has been no change since then." She said super-fast. Yep, she was over-caffeine.
"Oookay. Let me just take that coffee, I think you've had enough not to sleep for 3 days in a row." I said slowly taking that hot cup off of her hands. All the other people in the room laughed, except for him.
"I'm sorry Parker." Dr Gibson said, then he turned again to the residents. "As Dr Peters said, Mr. Smith has been in a coma since he was admitted, and we're taking every measure possible to make Adam wake up." He finished as some of the doctors wrote something down on their notebooks. "So, shall we continue?" And they left to watch another case which would entertain them much more than this.
I was visiting the hospital a lot, and since winter holidays had just started, I had been staying in my old bedroom. And as Laura and Alex were still on their honeymoon, I took care of Riley. I loved my sister, but there was so much I could take. So I locked myself in a bubble. I got food from the hospital's cafeteria and ate next to him, and I'd talk to him as if nothing happened. I remember the look on the nurses faces every day, when they walked by, as if I were crazy, or some poor little baby girl. They didn't understand, so I ignored them.
"So," I was telling Adam while eating Chinese noodles. "Charlie wanted to talk to me after class. And he asked me out on a date! And he's barely 24, AND he's super cute." I said. He's breathing was constant, until it was not. He coded.
Nurses and doctors entered the room, bringing the crash cart and resuscitating my friend. Everything happened in fast-forward. Dr Gibson telling me not to worry for the moment, telling me it would be fine.
After that, I needed to go out, so I took Riley to the park. She played with her friends for a bit while I sat on a tree, thinking. When I was my sister's age, Sarah, (my 'oh so lovely mother' who abandoned us as soon as Alex came) brought me here and I would climb this tree, the biggest one in all the park, just for the fun of it. Now, I was just breathing. Then, a soft sweet voice spoke from the bottom of the tree.
"Parker?" Riley said. I looked down to her. "Can I ask you something?"
"Sure." I said taking her hand and pulling her up the tree as she sat down next to me. "What's the matter?" I asked.
"What happened to Adam today? Was he waking up?" She asked. I didn't know how to answer to that without destroying her beautiful naïve mind.
"Not exactly." Telling her that lie broke my soul. "But he will."
"I hope so. I like him. And you are good together."
"Yeah, he's a good friend." I laughed.
"No silly. Don't you see it? He loves you."
"I know. I love him too."
"Then why isn't he your boyfriend already?"
"I..." I thought. And for a moment that idea made sense to me. But I shook that feeling away and said, "Let's just go home Ok?"
"Fine. But I'm right." She reproached as I jumped to the floor and helped her climb down.
I laughed. "Maybe Riley. Maybe."
When we arrived home she rushed upstairs to her room and I went to make us some food. I know its super weird, but to disconnect myself from the world I cook listening to music with headphones on. This made my crazy-goofy-stupid-gorgeous-weird-lame-socially-challenged friends incredibly lucky when they got the idea to scare me with a knife in my hand...WRONG CHOICE.
"Bu!" They jumped at me.
"Holly shit!" I shouted. The knife flew through the kitchen, and almost, but with the big-fat luck my friends have, it didn't hit their heads and it plunged itself to the wall. "Oh my god! You freaking idiots! I could have killed you!" Naturally, they were laughing their asses off. "Ha-ha, laugh all you want, but one of these days, that knife will end up stuck in one of you." I said.
"You should have seen your face." Bailey roughly said already on the floor with the rest of the girls.
I made my way to the other end of the kitchen to grab the knife and started cooking again trying not to laugh, I'm too stubborn to give them the satisfaction. It did not work. Soon enough we were all laughing, and if you ask me, at this point it was for no reason whatsoever.
"Well, if you want to stay for dinner, then be useful. Help me cook or arrange the table." I said pulling myself together, and started chopping the tomatoes again.
"I'll put the spaghettis in the water." Peyton offered. First you have to know that Peyton was such an incredible cook that she once set on fire some noodles. I mean, we really love this girl, but she was not made for cooking.
"NO!" We all shouted at once laughing.
"Okay, okay." She said raising her hands. "I'll put the cutlery. Come Sophie, it's not like you are a chef either."
We all laughed. Serena and Stella prepared the sauce, Rachel and I finished the spaghettis and Bailey went to fetch Riley.
"So, Riley..." Sophie said stuffing food into her mouth. "How's school going? Any boy you like?"
At this comment Riley's face turned tomato red. She's so cute when she gets nervous. "ummm... I... Lucas was playing football, ran over to me, gave me a kiss, and ran away again with his friends."
"In the lips?" Sophie joked.
"Ewww! Gross! In the cheek!" She said.
We all laughed. "And you Parker? How's Charlie going?" She asked with a mischievous smile.
"Who's Charlie?" Riley said clueless.
"Someone you're sister's been dating. Did you get past THE part already?" Rachel continued Sophie's joke. This was getting so inappropriate for a conversation with an 8 year-old. But we were all smiling except for Riley, who had no idea about what we were talking.
"You disgust me girls." I chuckled.
"What's THE part? Ah! Does it mean that you had your first kiss together?!" She shouted.
"Something like that sis." I said still staring at Rachel.
"You'll get it when you're older." Stella, the mature one, explained my sister.
After dinner, we washed the dishes and Riley went to sleep. We talked until we also fell asleep.
A/N: Oh my god guys! I'm soooooo sorry I took aaaaaaaaaages to update. But I was on a trip and couldn't write. Anyways, what do you say? like it?
