I was over exited but also worried. I was pacing back and forth in the waiting room, remembering what had happened an hour ago.
His hand touched my cheek softly, one finger drying my tears, as we smiled, so happy he was finally awake. I sat down on the chair next to the hospital bed and grabbed tightly his hand.
"You were out for almost a year. I..." I looked at him, my vision still blurry. "I thought you left me." I cried.
Adam squeezed my hand and chuckled a bit. "I would never leave you hobbit. Who else could annoy you?" I laughed at his comment, finally looking at him in the eyes. Those chocolate brown eyes, always cheerful. "But you have to tell me what I missed! How's everyone?"
"Alex and Laura went on their honeymoon, came back, and meanwhile I stayed here with Riley. They're... they are all happy and now, I feel like I have a whole family again."
"How are the girls? Did anyone break up with anyone? Do I have to punch someone?"
"Maybe you'd want to recover completely first. And they're all fine. In fact, Sophie is going out with someone. He's cute."
"Not cuter than me, right?"
I laughed. "No. No one's cuter than you."
"Come here." He said moving a bit to the side and pulling my hand a bit, telling me to get on the bed. We intertwined our fingers, and I laid on the bed, my head on his chest, expanding and relaxing with every breath. He wrapped his free arm around my back, as mine wrapped around his waist.
"Please don't fall asleep. Just, at least not for now. I'm scared you might not wake up."
"I'm not going anywhere, okay? I'm awake, I'm here." He whispered. We stayed there for at least 20 minutes, when a nurse came in and told me to wait outside until they were finished running tests.
Now I saw 3 of my friends running towards me, all smiling, some with their boyfriends. "He's awake girls. He's back!" We group-hugged and were near tears.
"Did you call Annabeth already?" Sophie asked.
"Yeah, she's on her way. Any news from the girls?" I asked.
"They'll be here as soon as they can, but they won't get here for at least 2 more days." Rachel said. As she was saying this, I saw his mom walk in, worry relief and excitement all mixed up in her face. I passed my friend's boyfriends and couldn't stop smiling. I grabbed her hands and told her that she wasn't alone anymore. That she could finally see her son without machines all around him, but smiling with open eyes.
After a few minutes, a nurse came to tell us we could see him, 4 at a time. As Danny, Andrew and Ricky (Rachel, Bailey and Peyton's –in that order- boyfriends) were all Adam's friends, they went in together with Annabeth. Then the girls talked with him for about 15 minutes. I wanted to go in last to talk with him about what I had said minutes after he woke up.
Sophie came out first and sat next to me. "He talks like nothing ever happened. I... how does he do that? Always laugh and making sure people around him are cheered up. You know him better than us, is it just pretend, or is he always..."
"Yeah, he's always like that. I don't know how he does that, but that's him. That's my best friend."
"Go in Parker. He really needs you right now."
I took a deep breath and stood up looking once more at my friends. I walked towards the room and sat down in front of Adam. I couldn't help but worry. Did he hear what I said? Does he still feel that way about me?
"What's wrong?" He asked.
"How did you..."
"Parker, please. I know you enough, what's the matter?"
"When you were waking up and I was talking to you, I said something that..."
"You would've been." He cut me off taking my hand and pushed my hair behind my ear. "If we were in a Disney children's movie, you would've been." I let out a breath I wasn't aware I was holding.
Right then Danielle, the best nurse there was at that hospital, came in and brought a Jell-O with 2 spoons. Adam and I took a bite.
"So, remember that guy that's been dating Sophie? He's red-head."
"Seriously? Oh crap, I owe you 5 bucks!"
"Seems like it." I ginned.
"I really thought she had a thing for brunette guys."
"Apparently she likes red-heads most."
And we sat there, talking, like nothing ever happened.
