Adventure. Hmm, don't think I'm ready for that. But if it means bringing back Leslie, I'm ready to take to the risk. We got down from the roof and she explained what the journey was about.
"After 5 years of being a ghost, you have one week to find a dead body and your memories. You have to find them before the Master of the Dead takes you to purgatory or wherever the hell he chooses to bring you."
I bit my lip and asked, "Wait, if you can just get another body... Why didn't you just take Allyson's or any other dead person you found on the way?"
"I find it unfair taking another person's identity. I want to be accepted for who I am and not for another citizen." Leslie sighed, gesturing to my backpack.
"Time to pack cowboy." She snickered.
"Oh right." I replied, packing the usual stuff needed for a trip. Trail mix, water, all of my saved pocket money combined, my sketch pad, a pencil, a t-shirt and a bag of Cheetos.
"Is that how much guys pack for a one week roadtrip?" Leslie laughed, snapping her fingers. Suddenly a polka dotted suit case appeared out of no where. It had everything! All you ever needed. Then she handed me two hundred bucks. "Where'd you get this much money?" I exclaimed, looking through the pile of cash.
I looked at my 20 dollar savings and just put them back in the jar. Leslie's freaking rich!
Her eyes wided and she stammered, "N-no where."
I shrugged the conversation off then asked her, "How am I going to tell my parents?"
There was a silence for a moment until Leslie smiled and said,
"Leave it to me."
* * *
"Ok, just like we planned right?"
"Right." I replied, actually starting to forget what we just talked about.
I walked towards my mom who always wakes up at 3 in the morning and put on my best innocent smile.
"Honey, why are you awake? I was expecting you to be up at lunch." Mom chuckled, patting my back.
I didn't reply but of out of the blue my mom just kept staring at me weirdly. Was she studying me?
"Alright Jesse, I know you want something. I see it in your eyes. Spill."
Ugh, moms. They know everything.
I sighed and said, "Can I please go to a..."
Shoot. What did Leslie say again? I tried to think of something quick and again, smart moves aren't my thing.
"Camp trip! Can I go to the school's Camp trip?" I finally said. I scanned the perimeter and I saw an annoyed Leslie shaking her head. I wonder why? That was a good move if I say so myself.
"Isn't your school year over?" Mom asked, putting down the napkins she was folding as she looked me straight in the eye.
Oh, that's why.
Crap, what am I going to say? I scanned through the ideas in my mind and chose the stupidest. As usual.
"I entered the Summer Science Club!" I blurted out. I covered my mouth, praying to God that my mom didn't hear what I just idiotically said.
Too late. Her eyes widened and she screamed.
"The Science Club! Oh, Jesse! You're maturing into a smart and responsible young man! I'm so proud of you."
I managed to give a small smile but I saw Leslie in the corridor giving herself a face palm.
"Yeah mom. We're going to identify different leaves, animals and all that stuff. We leave tomorrow." I said, trying to look really excited. I actually kinda felt bad. I made my mom proud of me for once in my life but it was all a lie.
