Evelyn grabbed some stone tiles and a pair of floor boards. She laid out the tiles in a wide diamond shape in which the sharper end started the next diamond until there were 4 diamonds. Evelyn lead us over to one end of the path.
"Use your imaginations real quick," Evelyn said, "You guys are explorers and you are at a river and there are some turtles in the river. You gotta get across to resume your journey. If one person touches the water, everyone on the team is out. But, you can't just jump from turtle to turtle because if you do, they will swim away and you will fall in. So you have to use these two floorboards to get across. Any questions?" Kenny raised his hand.
"Kenny?" Evelyn said, pointing to him.
"Can we say that there is a volcano that is about to explode and we have to get across before it does?" he asked.
"Sure," Evelyn said. Jojo raised her hand.
"Jojo?" Evelyn said.
"Can we say that instead of turtles, they are bombs that will explode if you jump on them but won't if you walk on it using a floorboard?" Jojo added.
"Okay. But let's not change the story from there. Any other questions?" Evelyn asked. No one raised their hand.
"Good luck," Evelyn said, giving Kenny a floorboard and me a second floorboard."Okay! So how are we gonna do this?" Martin asked.
"I say we put the first floorboard between those two bombs and we all walk across those together," Jojo said.
"Sounds like a plan," Kenny said. I nodded.Jojo set down the first floorboard. And lead us all across it. I handed her my floorboard and she laid it down across from it. We kept doing that and following Jojo's lead.
"Pause for a cause!" Evelyn shouted when we were finishing the third diamond. "You all realize that you have left one of your team members and now you have to go back. And, since Martin is in the back, he has to lead the way back!" Evelyn held up a teddy bear and sat it on the ground, "Everyone has to hold this team member at least once during the rescue. Good luck," she said.
Everyone slowly spun around to face the other way.
"We use the same strategy to get back," Jojo said, "Here is a board, Martin." Jojo held the board up to the front and we all passed it to Martin. He reluctantly pulled one hand out of his jacket and grabbed the board. He lined it up and we all made our way back to rescue the 'team member'. He slid both hands out of his hoodie pockets and grabbed the teddy bear. We all successfully made it back to the other side of the river. We all cheered and high fived as Jojo swung the teddy bear around by its arm in the air.
"What is with your hand?" Jojo eventually asked, looking at Martin's left hand. I followed her gaze. On his left hand, his pinkie and ring finger were both pretty much non existent. I had barely even noticed it.
"I-I uh-I..." Martin started.
"Stop talking, Martin," Evelyn said, "Just take a deep breath and tell us."
Martin let out a sigh. "I was born without them. That's all," he said.
"It's kind of cool actually," Kenny said. Martin shrugged.
"Yeah I agree with Kenny," Jojo said.
"It makes you...unique I guess," I said, "Sorry that was an odd comment actually...I...yeah."
"Thank you, Leia," Martin said.
"It's Leighanne," I corrected.
"My bad," he said, shrugging. I giggled a little bit and soon everyone else was laughing a little bit too. That's when I learned that a lot of thing including laughter is contagious.
