The alarm clock buzzed early in the morning at about 6:00 AM. I let out a groggy moan and hit the alarm clock with my fist. It shut off and I rubbed my eyes.
"Morning, Jojo," I grumbled.
"Hey, Leighleigh," I heard Jojo's voice grumble from the top bunk.
"Prank?" I asked.
"Huh?" Jojo questioned.
"The prank," I repeated.
"Oh right. We'll know if it worked or not on our way out," Jojo replied.
"Okay," I responded and I rolled out of bed. I took off my pajamas and changed into some blue jeans, a plaid shirt, and a pink sweater. I tied my hair into a ponytail and put on some mismatching wool socks and tennis shoes.
I lead Jojo out to the living room where Martin and Kenny were sitting on the couch while Evelyn sat on the yoga mat on the floor. Both of them looked asleep.
"Hello, friends," Evelyn said.
"Hi," I said.
"When's breakfast?" Jojo asked, "I want some coffee."
"Breakfast is in about an hour," Evelyn told her, "There is still time to shower and get ready. Also, there is no coffee, but there is hot chocolate."
"Aww why?" Jojo groaned.
"Hot cocoa is close enough," I encouraged, "And maybe there will be marshmellows."
"True," Jojo admitted, "I guess I could settle with hot cocoa."
"Good for you," Evelyn said, "That's very, very good."
"Thanks," Jojo replied.
"Now that everyone is awake, let's go outside and sit by our campfire to discuss our day," Evelyn said. She opened the door and I watched as Kenny pulled Martin to his feet and we all walked outside. It was dark and foggy outside, but we all went out anyway. I half expected to hear a loud pop when we sat on the logs, but I heard nothing.
"So, let's all start with talking about how we are this morning," Evelyn said energetically, "Just name one or two words to describe how you are feeling right now. I'll start and we will go to my left to Kenny and then Martin and then Leighanne and then Jojo. Happy and excited." She turned her gaze to Kenny.
"Exhausted," Kenny said with a yawn.
"Sleepy and happy," Martin said.
"Decent," I said.
"Tired," Jojo said.
"Why are you all so tired?" Evelyn asked.
"We are all used to staying up until midnight and sleeping in until 12," I replied, hoping Evelyn wouldn't be suspicious.
"Oh that I can understand," Evelyn said, "Since the other cabins will be doing their morning excersizes in about 30 minutes, why don't we start early? Everyone up!"
We all stood up sleepily with Evelyn.
"Let's stretch," Evelyn said, clasping her hands together and raising them above her head like a rocketship nosecone. We stretched with Evelyn sleepily.
"Now let's do some jumping jacks!" Evelyn cheered, "Give me ten." We all did our jumping jacks. She took us through a drill of jumping jacks and stretches for about twenty minutes and we all sat down.
"Now are you all feeling awake?" Evelyn asked.
"Tired, but in a different way," Kenny replied.
"That's fine," Evelyn said, "Now let me tell you about our plan for today. We are going to do some archery! It's gonna be pretty sweet and I'm really excited. I'm assuming you all know what that is, obviously. We will be out there until lunch at twelve and then after that, we are going to go do some survival skills which I am also really really excited for!"
"What kind of survival skills will we do?" Martin asked.
"Today we will start with directions and navigation. We will also learn how to make a fire and build a shelter and gathering food and some other cool stuff!" she cheered, "Then we will have what we call survival week at the end of this first month and we counselors will give the cabin groups some supplies and you will all go surviving, but the teams will be be in charge rather than the counselors!"
"Sounds pretty cool," Jojo said.
"It is pretty cool!" Evelyn cheered. I had no clue what to think of it, so I looked around. We all looked curious, nervous, or interested. Our exchange of glances was interrupted by a loud pop in the distance followed by a few screams. I turned my head in that direction. It was from cabin 6. I recognized Courtney's face in the midst of the screaming. I did my best to hold back a laugh as Evelyn looked shocked down at the group.
"My gosh," Jojo commented, "I wonder what happened." She sounded legit, but I knew she was acting.
"Yeah me too," Martin agreed, unable to hold back a smile behind Evelyn's back.
"That's a shame," Evelyn said, "It must have been a prank. Happens every year."
"Really? Wow," Jojo said.
"Wow indeed," Evelyn nodded and checked her watch, "Let's all talk some more about the upcoming week. Any questions about survival week?"
Kenny raised his hand.
"Yes, Kenny?" Evelyn pointed to him.
"What will we do for the rest of this week?" Kenny asked.
"Today is Sunday. Tomorrow, we will do horseback riding. Tuesday, we will do self defense. Wednesday, we will do an all day nature hike. Thursday, we will do kayaking. Friday, we will do rock climbing. Saturday we do another hike," Evelyn said, "Then, with the exception of survival week and roleplay week, we will do that week over and over again the whole summer. Any other questions?"
Martin raised his hand,
"Martin?" Evelyn pointed to him.
"Will we do more team building?" Martin asked.
"Yes we will," Evelyn said, "Any other questions?"
No one else raised their hands.
Evelyn took a quick look at her watch and said, "Cool. It's about 6:50 so let's head to breakfast."
We all got up and followed Evelyn to breakfast. At breakfast, I browsed down the line. There was scrambled eggs that looked pretty runny, so I skipped those. Next was some good looking country fried potatoes, so I took some of those. Following that was some bacon that smelled burnt, so I skipped that. Next was some sausage. All of the pieces of sausage looked exactly the same, so I skipped those too. There was also some raw bagels on a plate. I heated one up in a little toaster oven and spread some butter on it. You honestly can't go wrong with bagels and butter, especially when everything else is premade and looks disgusting. We were also given water, milk, orange juice, hot cocoa, tea, or decaf coffee. Jojo was hungry and still tired. She didn't even notice the coffee. So, I poured her a cup of decaf coffee and if science was on my side, hopefully Jojo wouldn't notice it and some kind of placebo effect would take place and she would feel more awake even though she just drank some decaf coffee. My dad had taught me about the placebo effect last summer. One evening, my head really hurt and I told him. He was out of aleves, so he gave me a vitamin c supplement pill instead and told me it was an aleve. I swallowed it and my head felt better the next day when he told me it was actually a vitamin c. It was an unusual science that I thought was pretty fascinating. Jojo hardly noticed the fact that it was decaf coffee and instantly was acting like her normal self again. I noticed Courtney during breakfast and she looked over at me with some angry glances, but when she returned my glances with angry glances, I acted like nothing had happened, even though I felt tears stuck in my throat. I told Jojo and she grabbed me some mint tea. Drinking it made me feel that much better. Maybe I could make this summer by drowning my friendship sorrows in tea.
