"Before we execute this plan, is anyone sensitive to aerosols?" Jojo asked. It was night time. Ten PM. Past curfew. Lights out. In the living room.
"You should've asked that before we made the plan," I remarked.
"No one's sensitive to aerosols? Good. Kenny, are you sure there's enough Axe in this can?" Jojo asked.
"Yeah. I'm sure," he said.
"Question," I said.
"Sure, Leighleigh," Jojo answered, pointing at me.
"Do you and I go to the boys or the girls?" I asked.
"Girls. If we get caught, I'd rather look like a prankster than a pervert," Jojo said.
"Got it," I said.
"Let's run over the plan one last time," Jojo said, "Better safe than sorry. We go around the back and downhill to cabin six. These doors have no locks, so we open up and walk in as quiet as possible. Kenny and Martin have Leighleigh's aerosol deodorant and my hair spray, while me and Leighleigh have Kenny and Martin's cologne. Girls go to the girls room and guys go to the guys room. You will be as silent as possible as soon as you open the door to your room. If anyone makes a sound and they wake up, run. If you think you may have woke them up, elbow your partner and hide without a sound in a place where they wouldn't find you even in the light. Hampers, closets, other sides of doors, whatever. And if all else fails, scatter, get out and go back to the house. If you get caught, tell them you went to get your counselor and accidentally went into the wrong cabin. Kenny's bad at that and Leighleigh will be too easily recognized, so get them out first. Any questions?"
"Let's go," I said. I put on my hoodie and held my can of cologne tightly. Jojo lead us out of the cabin. We tiptoed silently and went downhill to cabin six. My heartbeat was quick, but strong. I didn't feel ashamed or scared. Okay, maybe I did feel ashamed and more scared than ever, but I let it drive me anyway. I didn't want to feel scared. I didn't want to feel shame if we got caught or shame for doing the wrong thing. Maybe that night where I decided that I wasn't afraid anymore, I was lying to myself. I needed to tell someone.
"Jojo. I don't think this is a good idea," I said nervously.
"What? Why? I thought you were in," she said.
"No I'm in. This is just a crazy stupid idea," I whispered.
"But why are you so scared? You're being the Leighanne from the first time we did a prank, not the Leighleigh from the spicy spigot prank. What's wrong?" she whispered.
"I don't know. I'm still really scared, Jojo. I thought I was brave that night but I'm not," I whispered.
"Well, I know Courtney motivates a lot of people's actions. Use that back on her, gal! Give her a taste of her own medicine!" Jojo whispered, punching me in the shoulder.
"How? Tell her what to do?" I asked, confused.
"No. Okay I probably worded that wrong. Use it to your advantage I meant. What's some powerful feeling she's given you after your friendship?" she asked.
"Anger, heartbreak, betrayal," I said.
"So you're mad, heartbroken, and betrayed. Make her feel that. Make her mad especially. I mean madness is hilarious. Heartbroken and betrayed. That's not as easy, so stick with anger. Make her mad, dude!" Jojo whispered.
"I guess," I whispered.
"You're not into it. When's a time when she made you really freaking mad?" Jojo said.
"We were at lunch and I was sitting at my table by myself, reading a book. She was with the popular kids and she was like 'come join us, you loner' and I was like 'no thanks' and she was like 'loner' and I was like 'I'm not a loner!' and she was like 'yeah you are, stupid! Get over here' and I was like 'please don't call me that' and she was like 'you are stupid though! Come be a cool kid! It's like you're not really my friend anymore' and I was like 'for reals?' and she's like 'yeah! Sit over here or you're not my friend anymore' and I'm like 'fine. I guess I'm not your friend anymore' and yeah," I said, feeling tears come down, "She's so rude I just wanna rip off her freaking highlights and punch her stupid face!"
"That's it. Keep going," Jojo said.
"She's such a jerk! I don't know why I even freaking liked her! Why does anyone even like her?!" I said in a half whisper half shout.
"So, are you ready to do this or not, bruh?!" she half whispered, half shouted.
"You betcha, girl! Let's do this!" I half whispered, half shouted.
"That's the spirit!" Jojo said.
My fear vanished. I narrowed my eyes, feeling my face redden with rage. I wiped off my tears. I felt like a bull watching a matador dance. I quickened my pace and stepped a bit more carelessly. We finally reached cabin six. Jojo walked quietly to the doorstep and turned the door handle. She opened it a little bit and took off her shoes. I took off my tennis shoes too and tied the laces together and draped them across my shoulders. This was the first time we tried taking off our shoes before going in. Heck, this was the first time we ever went in. Martin had looked up that idea on Google on his computer because he was concerned about us going in and making too much noise on the hardwood floor with our tennis shoes.
Jojo stepped quietly onto the door step and swung open the door. I walked in silently following Jojo inside. I walked into the living room which looked identical to our cabin. I went down the hallway and into the girl's room. I opened the door and went into the girl's room with Jojo. I saw Courtney on the bottom bunk, snoring, but she was curled up and facing the wall. I followed Jojo into the bathroom. She let me in first and I untwisted the cologne can.
"Spray that stuff until you legit feel like you're gonna pass out," Jojo whispered. I nodded. I walked over to the toilet and sprayed everything around me that I could. The toilet, the plant on top of it, the bath mat, the painting on the wall, the trash bin, the toilet plunger, and the floor were soon covered in cologne. I then helped Jojo who had finished spraying the sinks, the counters, the door, the towel holders and was now spraying the mirror. I opened the cabinet and sprayed inside of there. My head was beginning to hurt, but I didn't care at all.
"I think we are good," Jojo whispered.
"One sec," I said, and sprayed at the ceiling and the light fixture above the mirror, "Now we are good."
Jojo opened the door and sprayed at the transition between the carpet in the bedroom and the tile in the bathroom. We were tiptoeing out, happily spraying the carpet and the wall. I went to the nightstand and sprayed at the side of that. I noticed something familiar. It was my lucky bracelet. I stared at it for a minute. I reached to take it but stopped. She would for sure notice. But it was my prized lucky bracelet. How could I leave it?
"What is it Leighleigh?" Jojo asked.
"My bracelet. Do I take it or not?" I asked.
"Take it. It's yours. She's the thief. She's the wrong-doer. Let's go," she whispered. I grabbed it and followed her out, spraying the side of the bunk bed before I left. We met Martin and Kenny in the living room. Kenny had a pouch in his hand. Martin looked like he was sticking gum under the couch.
"What's that?" Jojo whispered.
"I'll explain when we get back. Just stick one somewhere in the girls room and one somewhere in the bathroom," Kenny answered, giving me two little black disks. I tiptoed into the girl's room soundlessly. I tiptoed into the girl's bathroom and put the disk in the dirt on the flower. I slid the disk underneath the bottom bunk where Courtney was sleeping. I looked at her for a minute. She rolled onto her other side as if to face me. She looked hateful, even when she was asleep, her eyebrows narrowed, her fists clenched. Maybe it was just me. I narrowed my eyes back and sprayed cologne on the side of the bed quickly. It was risky and I thought she woke up, but she laid there unmoving. I tiptoed out of the room and shut the door quietly. I gave them a thumbs up. Jojo opened the door. I followed Kenny outside and was followed by Martin and Jojo. I untied my laces and slipped them off, half tiptoeing, half skipping back to the cabin.
I let the others enter the cabin first and shut the door. I sat on the couch.
"So Kenny. Explain the black disks," Jojo said, crossing her arms.
"Well, it was a surprise for you guys," he whispered.
"We can't do surprise changes to the plan though! Do you get that?" Jojo said.
"Yeah I get that, but let me show you something. It'll be worth it," Kenny said. He pulled out his iPhone and opened an app.
"So I was texting my cousin Aaron the other day and he's like twenty one and he's in college and he pulls the best pranks on his room mates and his friends. I texted him and told him about our prank war and he liked it and so he sent me the black disks in the mail. They are microphones basically. They will set off and start recording sound when they hear people talking," he said.
"Cool, but what's the point?" Jojo asked.
"I was getting to that," he said, pulling up his phone, "On this app, I can type in a special code that came from the microphone set and it will save the recordings to that app. We can then hear what's going on in there and listen to it whenever we want. I mean, that's just priceless people. I put some outside too just in case."
"That's awesome! We all need to get that app and share the code and then we can all hear it when we want," I said.
"Okay. It's called BlueMic and the code is 965257," Kenny said. I grabbed my phone and downloaded the app. I punched in the code and it recognized the code. It had no recordings, but it had a 'Listen Live' button. I pressed that and scrolled through the live microphone sounds until I heard the familiar sound of Courtney snoring.
"I think microphone 4/10 is the girl's room," I said, "I can hear Courtney snoring."
"We can figure them all out tomorrow when we have the recordings," Kenny said.
"Kenny, do you realize how freaking great this is?!" Jojo asked.
"Yeah," he said.
"No you don't! Do you realize that you're a genious?! If they are at play, we can hear it!" Jojo said.
"True. Didn't even realize that," Kenny said.
"Let's go to bed now guys, before Evelyn comes," I whispered.
"Good point," Kenny agreed, "Let's go to bed."
"G'night, y'all! Great work!" Jojo whispered and we all went to sleep.
