We walked along making sure we kept on a brumby trail. "Who was that man you were talking to this morning." Hailey asked quietly.
"Brumby catcher. He captures brumbies and will either sell them to associations or rodeos or he sends them to the knackery." I explained. She gasped quite loudly but the boys weren't paying attention and I didn't want them to know about it. "Hey Skye, weren't you looking for that brumby herd?" Jonathan asked. I looked over to where he was pointing and smiled. I dropped my bag quietly and got my rope. "Are you planning on catching one of those?" Hailey asked.
"You remember that man from this morning? I have a feeling he will be here." I told her. She looked very confused. I quietly walked towards the herd. Many had spotted me but I couldn't see Darkest Night. I saw the foal with her mother. The mother was suspicious about me but the foal wasn't as scared as the other horses. The foal was oddly brave and keen to come up to me. She made her way slowly towards me, her mother watching me and her foal carefully. The foal was jet black. I looked at the rest of the herd and noticed that the only horse in the herd that was jet black was Darkest Night and her mother was brown so the foal's colouring surely came from Darkest Night. She came up to me quite quickly which struck me as odd but I found it cute. She looked at me shyly now. I bent down onto one knee and she sniffed my head. I looked up slowly and put my hand out to her. She sniffed the back of my hand and nudged it. I stood up and she didn't seem bothered. I then heard yelling and horses. Darkest Night came running through, taking the herd, closely followed by about half a dozen people on horse back. One of the men was the one that came to my tent this morning. He came running right near me so I tossed the rope around his horses neck. The horse reared up and the man fell off. "Stupid child!" He yelled at me. I rolled my eyes. "I told you to leave them." I said.
"What about the others?" He asked. I don't know what came over me but I hopped onto the horses back and he went into gallop. I finely noticed what I was doing but I couldn't get off the horse now. I tried to lead the herd to the stream but Darkest Night was fighting me off. I couldn't do a thing. One of the other men screamed a word and I was thrown off the horse's back. It didn't hurt but I knew I had to get away from the horses before I got trampled on. I had a whistle on my neck incase I lost a person but now I didn't know where I was. I blew it and notice that most of the herd stopped for a moment then raced away. "Skye!" Someone yelled. I saw Jonathan and was relieved. I ran up to him and gave him a hug. "I've never been so happy to see you!" I exclaimed.
"Are you ok?" He asked. "I saw you get thrown off that horse." He said.
"I'm fine but the horses aren't." I told him. I started to tear up because I was so worried. "It's ok Skye." He said, hugging me again. I breathed in deeply and sighed.
