"when's your break time?" she asked as she came up to the counter.
"i just got off it a few minutes ago," wonwoo answered. "why?" someone came into the shop and stood in line behind gaeul. "are you going to order something? there's a customer behind you."
"yeah, yeah. i'll have an iced americano," she mumbled. "you can't sneak out for a little while?"
"nope. the manager wouldn't be happy with me if i do," he said as he punched in the order. he called for mingyu to prepare her drink.he recited the amount of her payment and she handed it to him. "i guess i'm waiting," she said as wonwoo stashed it into the cash register and handed her the receipt.
wonwoo took the other person's order as gaeul stood by, waiting for her drink. mingyu finished preparing the drink, greeting the girl with a bright smile. "enjoy!" he muttered before preparing the other customer's drink. gaeul nodded, then headed for the nearest empty table.
"are you sure you two aren't dating, hyung?" mingyu said to wonwoo. "it doesn't look that way to me."
"what do you know? you haven't dated anyone. you know how dating looks like?"
"i may not be experienced there, but i know what i see," the younger boy replied. "if you're not dating, then you two must just be really close. i mean, she's going to wait until the end of your shift to talk to you."
wonwoo glanced in gaeul's direction. she wasn't looking their way, her attention was on her phone instead. she picked up her drink and took a sip before setting it back down, still engrossed on whatever it was on her phone. he shook his head. "we're friends now, i guess."
the rest of the work day was not eventful. people came and went, and gaeul still sat there as she promised. she went up to the counter to buy another order of americano and a slice of cake too. she waited for him like she said she would.
the two boys finished their shift and were ready to leave. wonwoo walked over to ga eul, who still seemed in a trance with her phone. "see you later in the dorm, hyung," mingyu called out to wonwoo before making a dash out the door. wonwoo just shook his head before pulling up the seat across from gaeul and sitting down. she looked up, apparently hearing the sound his action made and smiled.
"done?" she asked. the legs of the chair made a screeching sound against the floor as she sat up. "let's go."
"but i just got to sit down properly after my shift. can't i rest for a minute or two?"
she shook her head, a playful grin across her lips, and she grabbed him by the wrist, pulling him up. "let's go."
wonwoo didn't protest as she dragged him along. "where are we going?" he asked.
"you'll see."
he didn't ask any more questions, though he did try to pull his hand away from hers. he didn't like the feeling of being dragged. he stumbled and nearly tripped a few times because of her. it didn't take much convincing for her to slow down to a walk.
"you're such a slowpoke." she made a face as she poked fun at him. he decided not to give her the satisfaction of having her words get to him.
"are you done insulting me yet?"
"nope. you're boring. i need something to keep me awake," she muttered.
he rolled his eyes. "if you were bored of me, you'd be gone by now." it hadn't been long since that first day maybe a month ago but he was sure of that.
she didn't say anything in response and wonwoo took that as a sign of winning this battle. they walked together without talking. he thought maybe it was because she was thinking of a better comeback, but it turned out that they were already close to their destination.
"what am i supposed to be looking at?" he looked over at gaeul with a puzzled look. they had stopped at an alley that looked a little sketchy and made wonwoo feel uncomfortable. "why are we here?" then he noticed the big cans of paint and the paint brushes.
"i promise, no ajhussi is going to come out and yell this time," she muttered. he caught the glint in her eyes before she walked forward and grabbed the brushes. she threw one over at him and he caught it. wonwoo hesitated before walking towards her.
she got one of the cans open, revealing the pink liquid inside. "so, what's going to be our first masterpiece together?"
wonwoo wasn't sure what was going on exactly. just the day before he was just watching as she painted a mural on the wall of a shop he frequently passed by on the way to work. but there he was, with a brush in his hand and painting with her. how did he go from being a spectator to being her accomplice? what was gaeul even doing with him? wonwoo couldn't think of answers at the moment. he didn't know what he did to end up here.
