My alarm was going off. Music was blasting through the speakers. I felt around until I found my phone and I pressed the snooze button. I rolled over and rubbed my eyes.
Today was the day, the first day of school and my senior year. I was excited. I was ready to get out of school. It wasn't really my thing and I was ready for what the future held.
My dad told me that I could take a year off to try and get my band, Ultra Violet, signed to a record deal. We had a deal that if we didn't get signed in that year, then I had to go to school after that. I agreed to it and now we were rehearsing, literally every day and night to get good enough. We had to get signed. It was our dream.
I got up and went to the bathroom to wash my face and brush my hair. I got dressed, put on some makeup and grabbed my backpack. I walked downstairs and smelled pancakes and fresh coffee. I heard my mom talking to my sisters.
"Morning Jess." Mom said as I walked in.
"Morning." I said back.
My sisters, Morgan and Lei were sitting at the table. They were younger than me. Morgan was a sophomore in high school and Lei was in eighth grade. Morgan was in with the popular crowd and a total snob. She's my sister and I love her but she could really be stuck up sometimes. Lei, however, was super sweet and I really enjoyed hanging out with her.
I sat down at the table and mom placed a plate of hot pancakes in front of me.
"Thanks, Mom." I said.
"Welcome sweetie."
I put butter and syrup on them and poured myself some orange juice from the container that was sitting on the table.
As I was eating I could feel Morgan's criticizing stair on me as I ate. I tried not to pay attention but by about the fifth bite I couldn't take it.
"What?" I almost yelled.
"Why do you have to wear so many bracelets on your arm?" She asked.
"Why does it bug you?"
"It looks tacky."
"Well I don't care how it looks. I like it."
"Well fine. If you want to look ridiculous go ahead." She said and she waved me off with her hand.
"Fine I will. You don't talk to me at school anyway so I don't see why you give a care."
She just rolled her eyes at me. She was always making fun of the way I dressed. In her eyes I could do nothing right. I didn't care, I didn't need her approval.
There was a honk outside and that meant my ride was here. I downed my orange juice in one gulp, grabbed my bag and ran out to the car.
Mitchell, one of my bandmates, and best friend, was sitting in the drivers seat waiting for me.
"Hey Jess." He said as I got in the car.
"Hey Mitch." I said.
He drove off when I closed the door.
"Ready for the first day of senior year?" He asked.
"Yes! I've been waiting since we were freshman."
He laughed. "Same here. I just can't wait to get done and then get signed to a record label."
"Neither can I. I hope it happens." I said.
"It will. We have a gig next Saturday and if we keep it up, we'll get signed. I'm sure of it."
I smiled at him. Mitchell was like the brother I never had. We had met freshman year, in math of all places. Neither one of us were any good at school. One day he came over and saw my red strata caster in the garage and started playing. It was at that moment that we decided to form a band. We had one more member, Austin. He played the drums and Mitch and I played guitar. We were still in search of a bass player, so far we hadn't needed one but it would really be a great addition to the band.
