Mitch

I sat in my room, just strumming on my guitar. I had really been getting better, according to Jess. I couldn't figure that girl out. One day, she's crying over a guy that she doesn't think likes her back and then the next day she's dating him. I didn't understand it.

There was a knock on the door and I ran downstairs to answer it. It was most likely Caleb, he had texted me asking if he could come over.

I opened the door and Caleb was standing there.

"Hey bro," He said.

"Hey, come on in."

He walked in and we went up to my room. I sat down on the bed and he sat down in the chair at my desk. My computer was on and the picture on the screen was of me and Jess. It was before the accident.

"Okay, I know that look." Caleb said. "What's wrong?"

"Nothing." I said.

"Don't even try it. I know it has to do with Jess. What is it?"

"Fine, you wanna know what it is? I hate the fact that she's with Lane. He doesn't treat her half as good as he should. Honestly, he treats her awful and I don't know how she can't see it."

"Maybe you should tell her." He said.

"I have, but she won't listen to me. She's letting her feelings blind her. I don't know what else to do. We had another fight about it today and I'm scared that I really blew it this time."

"Mitch, listen, if you really care about her, then you won't give up. You have to keep telling her, keep showing her that he's not the right guy for her."

"I don't know. I've done just about all I can do."

I hung my head in frustration. The real truth was that I liked her, a lot. I wanted to tell her so badly, but I couldn't. No matter how much I hated the fact that she was with Lane, I couldn't tell her that I like her. I wasn't that kind of guy, the kind to steal another guy's girl.

"Well I know you like her." Caleb said.

I looked up at him.

"How do you know?" I asked.

"It's honestly, so obvious. Especially since the accident. I'm surprised that she hasn't noticed it."

"Well I can't help it. I know that we're best friends, but ever since it happened, I've felt more then friendship towards her. I just didn't know how to tell her."

"Just come out and say it!"

"Dude, she has a boyfriend. I'm not going to do that, I'm not stealing another guy's girl. Besides, it's obvious that she doesn't feel that way about me."

"How do you even know? Maybe she does, but doesn't think you do, so she just went for another guy." He said.

"But she's liked this guy since she saw him. Pretty sure that she picked him over me."

"Well, I still say that things might be different if you talked to her."

"Maybe, but guess I'll never know."

He dropped the subject and we went to play video games and I tried to forget about it. But I knew that would never happen.

I walked into school and said hey to some people in the hallway. I saw Jess standing by her locker and Lane was leaning up against the one beside her. They were smiling at each other and I just walked by, trying to ignore the pain that I felt in my chest.
