It had been almost a week now and I still hadn't talked to the new guy. I had figured out his name though, it was Lane and apparently he was an exchange student from Australia. So he basically kept getting even more amazing and my hopes just kept sinking because I knew that I had absolutely no chance now. Cute and Aussie? Yeah no way. But Mitch said I shouldn't waste my time with him anyway, we had a show on Saturday and I had to concentrate on the band.We had met with that boy my mom had told me about and he could play the bass better than anyone I've ever seen, so he made it in. His name was Caleb and he seemed pretty cool. He had the same music taste as us, so that was a definite plus.
I was sitting at lunch, in the usual spot. It was Friday, which meant that our gig was tomorrow and I was starting to get nervous. I always did before a show. My nerves just couldn't handle it. I barely ate anything and the boys could tell as soon as they walked up.
"Nervous?" Mitch asked as he sat by me.
"Yep. Show is tomorrow so of course." I said.
"Come on Jess, it's not that bad." Austin said as he sat down across from me.
"Well it is for me. You guys don't get nervous at all?" I asked.
"Well usually right before we perform, but not the day before." Mitch said.
"Same here." Austin said, "You just can't overthink it. Just roll with it. No need to get all worked up over nothing. Just do your thing on the guitar and you will be fine. You were born with a guitar in your hands."
I chuckled. "Yeah sure."
"Jess," Mitch said," You're legit the best guitarist I've seen, aside from myself of course."
He winked at me and I elbowed him in the side. Austin just shook his head at us.
"You two could be a couple, I swear."
"Um no. That would be weird." I said.
"Why would that be weird?" Mitch asked. He legit looked hurt.
"We're best friends, you're like my brother. I couldn't date my brother."
"I guess that's true."
"Are you okay?" I asked him, he really seemed upset.
"Yeah I'm good." he smiled, but I felt like it wasn't real.
"Well you better be." I stole his hat from him and put it on myself.
"No, no stealing my hat."
He took it back and put it on backwards, like he had it on before. I was strangely attracted to him when he did that, but I shook the feeling. I went back to eating and then I really did almost throw up, I looked up at the wrong moment, because in walked that Aussie hunk that I didn't have the courage to talk to. I immediately looked down at my food.
"What's wrong?" Austin asked.
"That Lane guy came in." Mitch said.
Wow he knew me way to well.
"Oh, I still don't see why you like that guy." Austin said.
I just shrugged my shoulders and continued looking down at my food. I didn't quite know myself but I did like him. I'd never even met him. I tried to talk myself out of it, but I was fighting a losing battle.
After lunch we went back to class and day dragged on. When three o'clock finally came, I bolted as fast as I could and headed for Mitch's car. He was always late and I stood by it to wait for him. He finally came out and smiled at me.
