 Dear Toby,

Your letter was very, very beautiful, and I loved reading every single word very much. I wouldn’t change anything about it, except add what happened the next morning.

So I woke up the next morning because I heard a loud noise downstairs. Light was pouring into your bedroom because we had forgotten to close the curtains.  I was momentarily blinded. I didn’t mean to wake you up- you were sleeping so peacefully- but my movement forced you to open your eyes. You smiled.

 “Morning, Jack.”

 “I heard a noise downstairs.”

You placed a finger over my lips and we listened together.

 “Shit- my dad’s home.”

His footsteps started to come up the stairs. We ran around silently as I helped you tidy your bedroom up a little. You panicked and pushed me into your large closet; just in time.

 “Toby.”

 “Dad. You’re home early.”

“Uh, yes. Wanna go out for breakfast?”

“Sure, dad. I’ll meet you downstairs in a minute?”

He left the room and when I could hear him walking back downstairs I opened the closet door. You smiled at me and hugged me. You really do like my hugs, I suppose. Which is good.

“Listen, you’re going to have to sneak out round the back.”

“Can’t I just wait until you go out and use the front door?”

“Dad will put the house alarm on- my brother will already be at work. You need to leave, now.”

You grabbed my hand and started pulling me downstairs, and I was a little shocked, but it seemed very important. So I let you pull me into the kitchen.

 “Thank you for having me-”

“Hush, listen. You’re going to have to go out the side gate and run- I mean run, okay? I’ll keep him in the house until I’m sure you’re clear. Oh… d’you mind if I…?”

 “Go ahead.”

You kissed me quickly but softly on the lips, and then you shoved me outside. I sprinted to the gate and ran away. Because it seemed important to you.

                Love,
                Jack.
