Dear Toby,
You haven’t replied to my last letter so I will assume that something is wrong.
I’m so very sorry for the trouble I have caused you with your friends. I didn’t mean to make things difficult for you; I just thought that you might like to sit with me that lunch. I feel like we have gotten so close recently. You can’t begin to understand the cocktail of emotions that coursed through me when I looked up to see you standing by my table- I can barely make sense of them myself. The idea that you might accept the invitation to sit with me had never actually crossed my mind. And you brought Thea with you. And it was lovely.
Thea is such a nice person. You both sat down and she just started chatting to me like the three of us had been friends for years. I am very glad that she is the person you call your closest friend, because you deserve her and she deserves you. It was so amazing to hear all those little anecdotes about your friendship. It made me think back to when you were just a story I made up. It made you even more real to me. And it was lovely.
Maybe I got so caught up in the laughter we were sharing to think about what might happen when we parted ways. I didn’t think you might be teased for sitting with the weird kid. I suppose it was all to be expected, really. Again, I apologise for bringing all of this down on you.
Might we meet in person, Toby? At the park? It would mean a great deal to me to be able to apologise properly.
Love,
Jack.
