thirteen|food shopping

"hit me, baby, one more time."

"Leo! We've got to go," I shouted running up the stairs. Starry Nights was busier than I had anticipated it to be on a Saturday morning, so I stayed an extra hour to help out.

I struggled out of my work t-shirt and put on the first thing my hand touched. My converse clad feet rushed down the stairs and outside to my truck. Leo was already sitting inside tinkering with the radio stations.

We arrived at their picturesque home in a few minutes. Waiting outside was Orion and the cutest girl I'd seen.

Her golden hair flowed down to her waist, she was dressed in all pink and a pair of rectangular glasses sat upon her face.

A few moments later Orion's left thigh was pressed against my leg, and Leo was chattering excitedly to Violet, Orion's sister.

"Looks like they're hitting it off, what other suggestions did you have for the wedding colors?" Orion leaned over and whispered in my ear.

Glancing to my right I saw that Leo and Violet were indeed hitting it off. Their rambunctious laughter filled the truck and Leo looked like he had just discovered girls didn't have cooties.

I hummed in thought, "Pink? I'm sure your sister would greatly appreciate that. Lets just call it a work in progress."

Orion flashed his pearly teeth in my direction and I focused my attention back on the road.

We arrived at the store moments later, much to my relief. Orion and the kids decided to blast Britney Spears, which was fine. Until they all started to sing along, in all their tone deaf glory.

"Never pegged you as someone who listened to Britney Spears," I stated to Orion as we entered the store and gathered two shopping carts.

He rolled his eyes and replied in a playful tone, "Nyx, everyone listens to Britney Spears."

An hour later my cart was filled with enough food to last Leo & I two weeks. Orion's cart, on the other hand, was overflowing with candy. It was like he was expecting a chocolate shortage in the near future and was stocking up for years to come.

Leo & Violet had grown tired of walking so they currently sat in the carts. The only visible part of them was from the neck up.

I glanced over at Orion and the empty expanse of space before us. Catching his gaze I rose my eyebrow in a challenging way, he seemed to catch on.

"We go on three," I spoke.

"One," he started

"Two," I continued

"Three!" We both shouted simultaneously.

I sprinted as fast as my legs would go down the aisle, not even looking to see where Orion was. Frozen TV dinners passed by in a blur. Leo looked startled, a little bit fearful, and insanely uncomfortable.

Behind me I heard Violet's shrieks of protest. There was only a few more feet to the finish line so I risked a glance behind me.

Orion's hair was spiked up out of his face and his eyes were narrowed in determination. Right before I turned around his feet got tangled in the long, untied laces of his shoes and he came to an abrupt stop. Laughing as he tried to regain his balance I opened up my mouth to claim my victory when Leo's voice rang out.

"Nyx, stop!" His voice was laced with panic.

In true dramatic slow motion fashion the next events occurred. I turned my head to focus on the path ahead of me. Only to make out the appearance of another person in front of us who was seemingly oblivious to the kid & food filled cart hurtling towards them rapidly.

Digging my heels into the smooth tile did nothing to stop the momentum of the cart. I tried throwing all of my weight back and although our speed slowed a little we were still heading directly towards the unmoving stranger who seemed to be really interested in the frozen mac & cheese.

In a last ditch effort I screamed out hoping to catch the person's attention. Not wanting to see the oncoming wreck I closed my eyes and hoped I wouldn't end up in jail for assault.
